What do you use as treats when training your pup?

kibble/ dry food when young and at home

then a mixture of different things depending on environment
waggs treats
chicken
I try try and choose good quality treats but don’t give lots all the time you can get away with just using there food it’s handy

sugarspiceplumfairy · 09/08/2022 20:23

Should be a full stop after lots in my post sorry not sure what my phone did

NellesVilla · 09/08/2022 20:25

Puppy ‘pick a mix’ from Pets at Home or cooked chicken broken up into tiny pieces. Mine loves it!

Aria20 · 09/08/2022 20:36

Mini cocktail sausages chopped up tiny. Tiny cubes of cheese. Tiny bits of ham.
Used to give bits of cooked chicken/beef but found out she is intolerant to both!
Mine has never ever accepted bits of kibble as a treat lol I am always jealous of those able to use "daily food allowance" of kibble to do training!

Lightningrain · 09/08/2022 20:39

We used JR or Anco pate chopped into little cubes, cooked meat (chicken or beef), cheese. Soft and smelly works well!

Another vote for cocktail sausages chopped into tiny bits.

Kibble when little. Start too high value and you’ve got no where to go

Mooloofoo · 09/08/2022 22:45

@SarahSissions great tip. Thanks

Tiny bits of boiled chicken, raw sweet pepper, cocktail sausage, squeezy cheese, pate, cubes of cheddar, toast, dried sprats……
find what motivates your dog.
a toy can often be more valuable than a treat.

Impossiblepossibilities · 09/08/2022 23:44

I start out with their kibble for the first couple of days, then gradually introduce different value treats. I like to have a few options, so in no particular order:

Cooked chicken
JR Salmon Pate (current pup goes mad for this)
Nature’s Menu puppy treats
Treats 2 Sit 4 Atomic Drops and Hypno Teasers
Arden Grange Liver Paste
Tiny cubes of cheddar
Sprats

It got too expensive on 'proper' treats and I didn't want to use his meal kibble. Boring! So I bought a bag of small kibble Fish4Dogs. It comes in several varieties and works out much cheaper than treats. If I need a particularly high value reward I take tiny cubes of cheese.

FuckingHateRats · 10/08/2022 18:34

In the house/garden I use little bits of the treats you buy in a bag - whatever is on offer.

Out in a stimulating, high-staked environment, I use the highest value treats. Tiny cubes of cheese, cooked chicken or (and this is like crack to her) those 100% dried duck fillets twisted into tiny bits.

She's only 14wks so we need to reward all the good at the moment!

Fish4dogs have small bags of kibble you can buy for 50p-£2 for a packet of 6. If you sign up to their free puppy club you also get more kibble and some other goodies. They are free delivery too!

i use the kibble as training treats for my pup, and then use pate for something higher value.

the pets at home own treats are fairly good value too!
