Dog stones in water. Anyone used them?

We recently laid some new turf - great timing with the weather. Our 6 year old castrated boy has turned the grass green in patches so I bought some stones that allegedly change the ph or something in his urine.
he is really suspicious of them and reluctant to drink.ive removed them from his water dish but since they cost me £15, I am wondering whether to bother putt8ng them in considering the state of the lawn anyway…

I’ve never used them, but I know some people who do and say they are work.

fill a jug with water and pop the stones in, top the bowls up from the jug

rookiemere · 09/08/2022 13:30

DH puts them in rookiedogs bowl.
No idea if they make any difference. We still have brown patches albeit less than before.

Worth noting sometimes dogs are wary of water that smells different- so you might have to wean him onto the “new water” 50% mix, 75% etc- I don’t know if they make the water smell different

That’s interesting
my dog hates London tap but loves Harrogate tap

Yep we used them. They work great, as long as your dog has no other water sources. The minute they drink from a puddle or stream then the dog rocks stop working.

Oh that's maybe what is happening to us. rookiedog loves drinking from streams and muddy puddles when we are out

Joyfulflowers · 09/08/2022 13:42

We purchased 2 lots, for inside & outside bowls. JoyfulDog just removed them! His preferred drink is from a dirty puddle. Our lawn is mostly brown patches🤣

stillherenow · 09/08/2022 22:44

I'm on my last pack. I don't think they work!

Girlintheframe · 10/08/2022 07:11

We've used them. Didn't work for us.

CallmeAngelina · 10/08/2022 07:14

My dog hated them. He used to pick each one out and drop them on the floor.
We have just become used to the brown patches on the own. At least they don't show up in a drought.

Trulyweird1 · 10/08/2022 07:17

Made no difference to my 2. They get through a lot of water, and they drink from the local stream when we are out ( interesting point , pp).

i have tried Pee-sticks in a specific part of the garden, an Astro -turf patch ( they ignored that). Makes no difference.

We make a point of going out for first of the day and watering it; thereafter catch as we can.

stillherenow · 10/08/2022 08:08

Mine only drinks from the bowl and we still have brown patches (also irrelevant now as entire lawn is brown!)

Branster · 10/08/2022 14:13

We used them and they made no difference.
The only way yo avoid brown patches is to not have the dog use the grass.
Or water liberally with the hose immediately after the dog has a pee. This didn't work for us either because it involves a lot of hosing and it's boring!

poshme · 10/08/2022 14:18

I read somewhere that if you add ketchup to their food it helps.

We try and water straight after the wee. We mostly fail. But all our grass is dried hay at the moment anyway.

bilbodog · 10/08/2022 14:20

Used them with our previous dog and it did work with him - dont have grass any more.

Tried that too - no change!

SirSniffsAlot · 11/08/2022 20:56

Nothing you add to water or food is likely to work because it's the nitrogen in urine that burns the grass. Nitrogen is a fertiliser but when delivered in too concentrated a dose it will burn (but fertilise the grass just outside the burn zone that receives a smaller dose, so you tend to get a lush green ring).

The only thing that helps is diluting the pee. This can be achieved:

  • by the soil under the grass being pretty wet already

  • by tipping a bucket of water onto the pee as soon as it's done

  • by the dog's natural peeing style being more of a sprinkle than a direct shot - as can happen if male dogs cock their legs high enough

It'll be better in winter when higher rainfall keeps the soil naturally moist. Worse now because of the draught.
