Breeder wants full payment 2 weeks before collection

As title really.... is this normal, my gut says no!

We paid £200 to be put on the waiting list before the pups were born, have since visited and chosen our puppy which were due to collect in 3 weeks.

Breeder sent an email last week about payment of outstanding balance "no less than two weeks before collection" and has just sent a text to remind me.
I didn't reply to the email at the time as I want really sure what to say but can't keep quiet on the matter any longer....

What do you all think, is this normal practice these days or should I stick with my gut and say we'll pay cash or bacs on collection?

Pay ok collection or what security do you have that they will hand over?

Playdoughcaterpillar · 04/08/2022 20:16

Pay on collection. Sorry.

frasersmummy · 04/08/2022 20:19

I have just bought a kitten..no deposit till I had seen mum and kitten and the environment the litter were in

Night before pick up I got a text saying are you paying cash or bank transfer tomorrow..which I guess was a polite way of saying remember I want paid

I wouldn't be paying 2 weeks out..anything could happen. Selling to someone else, keeping the pup eg

That's what I thought, she's very nice but I don't know her!!!

No way would I agree to that.

Frazzled2207 · 04/08/2022 20:23

Unless this was absolutely made clear before you paid the deposit, then I really wouldn’t.
cash or bank transfer on collection is normal surely

don’t think it’s necessarily dodgy but not a good way to do business don’t think. Do you have any concerns about the breeder?

SarahSissions · 04/08/2022 20:26

all of this screams at me as wrong. Greeder at best, puppy farm or scammer at worst.
you should never pay to go on a waitlist, they won’t even know how many puppies they are having- so can’t possibly honour all of the deposits they are taking.
then you will want to see them at least once with mum at 4-6 weeks and it sounds like you are being asked for the balance at this stage?

what does the puppy contract look like? For your ref from a decent breeder I would expect clauses that I couldn’t breed or export the pup without permission, that if I ever couldn’t look after the pup it must be returned to the breeder rather than going to a shelter or sold on, 24 hours to return the pup following a vet check as a minimum.

Onemoremakesthree · 04/08/2022 20:37

Thanks all, I didn't think it seemed right, I'll reply now to say that we'll be paying on collection!!
Watch this space 😆

Paying 2 weeks ahead smells of dpuppy died the night before collection to me.
Or am I just a suspicious cow?

Popsicle33 · 04/08/2022 20:45

No way. Sounds dodgy. Why aren't you getting a resume dog?

Onemoremakesthree · 04/08/2022 20:46

@Frazzled2207 I agree, I don't think she's necessarily dodgy but I don't know her at all, and don't know anyone who does as she's about an hour from us! It's their first litter so perhaps naive but I get the impression she's been taking advice from the stud owner, I just can't see how it's best practice!

@SarahSissions I thought the waiting list thing was odd but it was very common when we were looking for a pup, she did say if she didn't deliver what we wanted it would be refundable but it did leave us with a choice of one puppy! I've learnt a lot for next time (which there probably will be 🤦🏼‍♀️)
Not seen the contract yet, she mentioned when I very first spoke to her on the phone that she was putting it together but that was the last I heard and I haven't asked-will do now! She did put in the email about the payment that it's my responsibility to get it vet checked within 48hrs but nothing about endorsements etc.

I'll reply to her message now and hope it's not awkward when we go for another visit next week

@Popsicle33 I'm guessing you mean rescue ☺️ a few reasons, we only wanted a puppy of a certain breed, we have a 3 year old so we'd be nervous of a dog with an unknown history and shelters won't accept homes with small children, also she will be a working dog eventually so needs specific training from early days

Makes me really sad all this. Your speaking as if you are buying a new handbag or something. All breeders are greeders. They only do it for money there's no other reason. Poor dogs are constantly being bred then puppies going. Do you really want to keep encouraging that it's so nasty

Frazzled2207 · 04/08/2022 20:51

Bloody Nora def don’t send any money without a contract! Why would you? At the very least if you had a contract that said on such and such a date we will hand over the puppy that would be something.

GhostCastle · 04/08/2022 20:53

Don’t do it! I’d send a message to say you will pay when you collect.

And, god forbid, if it died do you think they'd repay you?

cheeseislife8 · 04/08/2022 20:58

How certain are you this isn't a puppy farm? It's certainly not usual practice IME

Summerhasbeenandgone · 04/08/2022 21:07

Have you Googled her address op? Looked at Google maps?

Onemoremakesthree · 04/08/2022 21:21

We did visit a couple of weeks ago when pups were 3-4 ish weeks old, so they definitely exist-at this point any way!!!

I'm quiet certain they're not a puppy farm, mum is kc registered and according to them this is her first litter, the breeder hasn't said or done anything else that's set the alarm bells ringing and the stud is from a very well respected, picky, breeder, it's just this payment thing that I've found concerning, especially with the reminder.

I've sent a message basically saying we're not having second thoughts but we won't be paying until we pick her up and have signed contracts, cash or bacs to suit them

Surely anyone genuine would understand our concerns!

I wondered if it was a new way of doing things that I wasn't aware of, but clearly not!! Thanks for all your help

Not all are. The breeder of ours bred from her dog as she wanted to have one of her puppies. She did this twice and is no longer a puppy breeder. I don't think the money she got really covered the time she and her dd spent with the puppies. She slept downstairs with them and the mum for the first five weeks if I remember correctly. She did an awful lot of work in giving all us new owners cds with tons of photos of the puppies as they grew so we could see just how much they changed.
I am not disagreeing there are a lot of unscrupulous breeders out there, but there are some good ones. You just need to look and be very careful. We couldn't get a rescue as we had chickens and cats, and rescue was our first port of call.

Bananarama21 · 04/08/2022 22:00

Sounds like a puppy farm tbh op she's not a registered breeder.

I am so sick of this attitude to breeders.

Where do think well-bred puppies are going to come from if not from someone who thinks about the match between dam and sire, does proper health tests, and takes good care of bitch and pups? Many breeders will breed a bitch between one and three times., and then keep that bitch with them for the rest of her life. They often keep a puppy from a litter.

We all know that bulk-breeding commercial outfits are crap for the adult dogs and for the puppies, but there are plenty of decent people who breed dogs.
