Dog bedding that doesn’t get covered in hair that sticks in the material.

Afternoon all. We have an adorable black pug who sheds a lot.

this makes regular washing of bed/blankets a bit of a pain and having to ‘de-fur’ the washing machine. Especially normal fleece ones that that seem to be the most commonly sold.

He has the bed on the photo attached which is very cosy and he likes it (it’s described as ‘canvas’ and was from Joules). The fur shakes off before it goes in the machine and it washes well. I’m looking for blankets (small ish) perhaps of a similar fabric but despite a lot of searching online and in person I can’t seem to find anything. Joules have a dark green one but when I saw it in person it is fleecy on one side.

any ideas/solutions would be much appreciated, he would use the blankets as an extra layer on his bed plus to put on the car seat etc.

I can't advise where to get said blankets but I too have a heavy shredder and have found a horse rug wash bag invaluable for keeping the fur out of the washing machine. I got mine from Amazon. The fur does tend to stay on what you wash, but is easily shaken off. Then I turn the bag inside out on the washing line. It dries in minutes.

I use this for my three Cavaliers and three long haired cats bedding.

You should try Vamoosh.
It's brilliant stuff, it dissolves the fur in the machine. You just add a sachet and put everything on a hot wash (it has to be a 60 plus degree wash or it doesn't work)

I have THE hairiest dog, my machine would always be left covered in fur, I had to wash the machine out, let it dry and then Hoover it. Now I wash all his blankets/beds with vamoosh and have a fur free washing machine. Couldn't recommend it enough!! Saves so much time and probably the cost of a new machine.

You can get it from Amazon and B&M possibly other supermarkets too.

I don't work for vamoosh!

Thank you for the recommendations for vamoosh.
when I looked at it before I was under the impression it needed to be washed at 90?
if it works at 60 then I think the fleeces could cope with that?

thanks simbobs for the other suggestion too.

It works a lot better if you can do a 90 but still works on a 60 - will leave a few stray hairs but not thousands that clog up the machine.
I changed all the dogs fleeces to white/cream so they can handle the 90 wash and they come out perfectly clean, I also whack a bit of white vanish in for good measure so they stay nice and white.

If you are doing fleeces for the first time on the lower temp I would add two sachets in for an extra boost.
After that, if you wash regularly, just one sachet should be enough.

We use the Vamoosh, but all dog related items go into mesh bags in the washing machine - it makes an enormous difference.

I don't worry about fleece blankets or fluffy vetbed getting hairy as have some moorland rider washbags which keeps the fur from clogging up the machine or my next clothes wash. I wouldn't want more chemicals than necessary to go into the waterways.

Need fabric with a tight weave to stop the hairs embeding. I've Waterproof bed which think is made of balistic nylon the hairs stay on top of, the car seat hammock covers are often similar material.
I have some lightweight microfibre sports towels from decathlon which I use on the dogs which are smooth not fluffy and the hairs just fall off.

I've got an old sheepskin (from IKEA I think) that I put in the dog bed - it sounds a bit over the top fancy, but it's actually very handy. I hoover it when I'm doing the floors, give it a brush very occasionally with the dogs brush, and hang on the washing line when it's raining and let it dry in the sun (lazy!). Very warm and cozy for the dog, hair doesn't show and easier on the washing machine.

OneFootInFrontOfAnother · 05/08/2022 08:10

Vet bed without question. You can give it a quick hoover (If you want to but no need) and pop it in the machine at 30. Dries really quickly.

Warm in summer cool in winter.

Some great suggestions thank you everyone.

Particularly useful now that many of us will be cutting right back on heating in the winter - my faithful little friend deserves some extra snug layers so vet bed or sheepskin would be a good plan.

(I washed his entire bed yesterday - he’s still rather put out that it smells of the wash and not its usual doggy smells)
