Neighbour has got a Presa Canario

I was looking for some information on this dog, my neighbour got one from someone who left him outside all the time, so he's obviously not socialised.
To be honest he's terrifying looking, he's huge but apparently only 8 months. Looking at pictures on Google he looks like he is a presa mixed with who knows what. So my question is for those who know this dog, can they jump over walls?
We have a wall between us and the neighbour but part of it is only about 4 feet, could he jump over this? I'm afraid to let the kids out into the garden.

He barks like mad if we go up the side entrance, and jumps up to look over, I don't know if that means he is territorial? We aren't taking the risk anyway, we usually use the back door all the time but are using the front now to avoid him.
Jalisco yea I thought that was a sign that he doesn't trust the dog with his small dog

I would be really anxious about this. I hope your neighbour has secured the rest of their garden and the dog doesn't escape after you have built up your wall. I would not be happy if a dog like that had access to the streets my DC walked or played on.

They are basically guard dogs, often trained for protection. He will guarding his house OP. The owner is taking a massive leap of faith not erecting high fencing before getting the dog. I’m also surprised the owner has another smaller dog, I wouldn’t have thought a Presa would get on very well with another dog to be honest.

They can be fine with their own family like a lot of dogs, but they are not so good with strangers.

I know people don't like pets 4 homes, but that website suggests that a Presa can jump a 6ft fence. Regardless of jumping, the fence needs to be strong otherwise the dog could break through.

Glad you got the wall up.

What is vile is someone putting chillies down that will burn and seriously injure an animal. I hate cat and fox poo as much as the next person, but I can't believe people are still so stupid and sick as to do that. Often the animals don't realise it's there until after, when they have burning paws and crippling bladder pain from it.

Report neighbour for having dangerous dog at first opportunity. And keep reporting.

I had Great Danes, they would doze in the open front doorway, up two steps to our doorway, gate about 3 foot always closed. They certainly couldn't jump over it. I think it would depend on how much of a run your neighbours dog had at the wall. Don't know why anyone would want this breed, trophy dog.

Our neighbours have a cane corso, so similar. The older lady that lives in between us is absolutely terrified of it, especially because he is so territorial and the fence is only about 4 ft tall, not helped by the owner saying he would indeed jump it to attack!

Personally if you have issues with this dog talk to your neighbour. I cant understand people who get these large dogs if they live in a town house. Is it a street house or rural you live. Is the man taking it to training classes. When he walks it does he have it on a leash under control. I would fix your fence front and back and let the neighbour know to keep his dog under control or you will report. Unfortunately due to so many idiots wanting dogs a lot of these dogs are bred for money not temperament. Many dogs like the corso, xxl bully's etc are bought as a Penis extension. They don't belong in street houses.

My next door neighbour has started letting her friends dog into her garden. It's a huge Preso de Canero and has already gone for my husband and myself if we go anywhere near our shared fence, usually if we are watering the nearby pots or planting them up. It could easily jump the fence. It also barks continously if anyone delivers anything or if someone with a dog walks past. It has not been neutered as its male owner refuses to have it done. We are in our 80s and I am terrified if it. My husband sits in the garden with a large knife in case it jumps the fence and that is no way to live at our age. We have tried to talk to our neighbour but sh ignores anything she doesn't want to hear. What can we do?

Presa Canarios are right on track to become the next XL bully or pitbull. Very strong and tall fence, with fence toppers

If the dog is aggressively going for you, I would speak to the council as I wonder if it comes under some sort of neighbour anti social behaviour?. Could you look at having the fence made higher at all either using trellises on existing fence, or putting your own higher fence next to the existing one?. I know you shouldn’t have to do this, but it could offer you some security and feel more safe?.

I would also speak to the Police and ask their advice. Your neighbour isn’t doing anything wrong so they won’t necessarily come out, but may have some advice.

RunningJo · 15/05/2025 08:14

I have absolutely no idea why people get these breeds. I’m sorry you have this living next door to you OP, I would absolutely get the wall raised as high as legally possible.
The fact the dog isn’t allowed to mix with his existing dog says a lot. If you are on good terms with your neighbour could you talk through your concerns and ask about secure fencing options their side as well as your wall.
I would also be causally be dropping into the conversation asking what training classes he has booked.
