Best long lasting soft toys for chewer!!

Aria20 · 29/07/2022 07:17

My dog loves soft/plush dog toys but makes it her mission to shred them. Especially ones with squeakers as she will find a weak spot in the lining somewhere near the squeaker to get it out! Then there is mountains of stuffing all over the floor.

This happens with more expensive brands as well as cheap ones and it's frustrating as it's money down the drain once she's ruined it. Obviously she gets enjoyment out of destroying the toys but it's not long lasting. We've tried rope toys which she will play with and destroy by unraveling the rope knots so they last a bit longer but she prefers plush toys. She is not interested in rubber toys at all. Obsessed and manic with balls so they are not allowed in the house.

Any recommendations for long lasting durable dog toys??

I buy the ones without stuffing, that way they’re still ok to be played with after they’ve been dissected - well until they get too small anyway.

Other than that I just buy cheap and accept that that’s how they’ll be played with tbh, lol.

We ended up going to a working dog supplier and getting the things they use to train dogs to return the birds from a shoot. Pretty indestructible!

KangarooKenny · 29/07/2022 07:32

Mine can destroy the indestructible in no time at all. We stopped giving them to her in fear of her getting it in her stomach.

MermaidSwimming99 · 29/07/2022 07:34

Our “kong” branded toys have lasted well. The rubber ball was brilliant and actually helped to train her to stop destroying tennis balls. The teddy she carries around and the rubber frisbee is 18mths old and still in one piece.

Girlintheframe · 29/07/2022 07:35

We buy Fluff n tuff. More pricey than a lot of soft toys but definitely last. Ours gets them for his birthdays and Xmas, some are 3 plus years old now and still going strong.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 29/07/2022 08:05

We've tried all the brands recommended on here and our beagle destroyed them in, (quite literally in some cases), seconds.

None lasted longer than half an hour and I became too worried about him getting a blockage so he no longer gets stuffed toys.

I think you either need to buy cheap (charity shops or car boot sales are good for this) or not buy them at all.

Aria20 · 29/07/2022 08:05

@KangarooKenny thankfully she doesn't eat any of the stuffing or other material just chucks it around the room.
@MermaidSwimming99 she doesn't seem to like texture of rubber toys - doesn't play with them at all!

@tabulahrasa we've had a few of those flat ones without stuffing but they seem to get ripped to shreds too!

My Lab is the same, even the branded ones are destroyed within a day. I just accept that's the way she plays with them, and rather them than my sofa! I buy job lots cheap off eBay now and am just glad she's happy she's not eating it once's pulled all the stuffing and squeaker out.

Aria20 · 29/07/2022 08:21

Ok so I should prob just go to a charity shop and buy some cheap soft toys that are not necessarily dog toys and let her crack on! She loves to steal my 4 yo soft toys and she's gentle with them - seems to know not to shred them?!

We buy the occasional soft toy as a treat, but he will destroy them all in minutes. Loves to get to the squeaky ‘heart’ of his prey! The only one he hasn’t is an ancient stuffed rabbit which was in the garden for about two years before being rediscovered and is very solid. He’ll occasionally gnaw another limb/ear off but hasn’t disembowelled it. He will chew anything (not our stuff) - likes rope toys, yakkers go quite quickly these days, bones and buffalo horns are good and last well.

Ivedonethisthreetimealready · 29/07/2022 12:21

Tearribles may work. They allow for the dogs natural predatory pattern to tear their prey. But then you just stick them back together and they can tear them up again and again and again.

Tearribles

My old Labrador could find, disarm and remove the squeaker in under ten seconds, whatever the soft toy. I got fed up with sewing them up again!

Impossiblepossibilities · 29/07/2022 13:00

Mine have loved the Kong Knots range. Fluffy enough to be attractive, but the inside is literally knotted rope, so if they destuff it they can still play with it safely.

My new terrier pup likes the scrunch knots fox the best. My old Lurchers loved anything that flapped when they shook them, so birds were popular. I used to buy the destuffed toys for them as well.

If you buy non-dog toys, it’s best to try and get ones with embroidered facial features, rather than glass or plastic eyes, just in case.

Munchyseeds2 · 29/07/2022 14:13

Another vote for the Kong range in above post

13 quid well spent for our staffy and nod destroyed yet

JMPB · 29/07/2022 14:15

My dog destroys them all so we just buy them from the charity shop now so it doesn’t matter if he destroys them (:

Womenandwomenfirst · 29/07/2022 14:25

Ooh, I think I’ll get one of those Kong ones. My dog too can find the squeaker in record time and have a mouth full of stuffing in seconds. It doesn’t make any difference whether pricey or cheap, he’ll destroy it. He eats the fur off a tennis ball too Confused

TheCanyon · 29/07/2022 14:28

We're lucky enough to have 4dc worth of soft toys. Destroyed in minutes though!

Strangely our boys favourite toy is a mini micro scooter wheel!

Aria20 · 29/07/2022 17:15

Thanks for suggestions the tearables look interesting and I'll think again about the kong knots ones - I've been reluctant to pay that much for her to destroy...

These are all about the same age. The duck never had stuffing but has lost its squeaker, legs, bill and half it's body. The Kong knots fox has lost an ear but is otherwise intact. The bunny is totally unchewed.

Our pup seems fairly selective about which toys get chewed for reasons I've yet to ascertain. Some things get destroyed the day they are bought others last for ages.

Olddognewtrick · 29/07/2022 18:53

A Kong Knots teddy. Most of the damage was done within 20 minutes of having it. He immediately removed the ears and then went in through the back to get the squeaker. You don’t get stuffing everywhere but it’s no more robust.

@tizwozliz we had the bunny and it lost its eyes for some reason!

Oh aye - they don’t last longer because they’re sturdier, just because you don’t have to take them away to stop the stuffing carnage 😂

I’ve found with dogs that unpick seams that no soft toys no matter how much they cost or how tough they claim to be stand up to it.

Darklane · 30/07/2022 10:11

No such thing!
My lot have eaten Kongs, flower pots, the very biggest Nylabones that advertise as heavy chewers proof, eg Rottweiler etc….not against Skyes they ain’t. One even chewed a hole in the wall in the hall & it’s a stone house.
Now keeping my eyes peeled for when they next dig up the roads to see if I can cadge some lengths of drain pipe.
