Won't stop licking after lap spay

My little 1 year old had a lap spay yesterday and is wearing a body suit to cover up the wounds. But she won't stop licking and tugging at the suit trying to get it off, she was obviously drowsy yesterday when I collected her but over night and this morning she seems unable to relax as she keeps trying to get at the wounds. They look fine to me, I'm not worried about the healing but it can't be nice for her to be so agitated by them . Is this normal and what can I be doing to make it easier for her? She's not really eating much yet so I don't think kongs or anything like that would work.

No advice I am afraid but just giving you a bump x

What pain relief is she on?

WhackingPhoenix · 26/07/2022 11:57

Cone or cushioned doughnut collar?

she's not got a cone or a collar - just a body suit. She had a metacam this morning...
she seems to have finally laid down for a sleep but head pops up at any noise - she's really finding it hard to settle

We needed tramadol for our 27kg girl, and I'm asking for the same for our 18kg girl who is being spayed in 2wks. Metacam wouldn't have touched the sides for the older dog, but she's part husky, greyhound and drama llama.

It's possible the pain relief isn't enough. IMO they under medicate for this. Consider a cone or donut for her if she's still trying to get to the wound.

We discussed lap spay for the younger dog as she's a highly anxious Romanian rescue and we're worried about how she'll cope afterwards and they advised that the post-surgical pain can actually be higher with lap technique depending on how much they had to inflate the abdomen to access everything.

We're going for a regular spay, but there could be complications as she's supposed to have been spayed already but she definitely has what seems to be seasons (3, and all bang on time for a proper season) that suggest her milkshake brings all the boys to her yard.... It's possible she has "retained product" but I think it just wasn't done.

She’s only 12 kg so not nearly as big as yours… but if she isn’t more settled this evening I’ll definitely call the vet tomorrow. I feel so sad for her… she seems so forlorn!
