Dog food for middle aged working Lab

stratforduponavon · 13/07/2022 21:02

We need to change our dog food as his skin is getting scurvy and he has dandruff.

We have used Harringtons, Arden Grange James Wellbeloved and also mix in some wet food like Winalot. He won’t eat unless we has wet food too.

I don’t want to end up getting very expensive food. We tried Canagan briefly but it really was too expensive for us.

Any wise words and suggestions?

Is he a working lab? As in working or do you mean breed. I can help more with former! Later I've had some success with pets at home new own brand on working, but not "working" terriers

So he is a lazy sausage.. working lab breed but just a loved pet. Hasn’t done a days work in his life!

What dry food do you feed at the moment? Have you considered supplementing with some better quality wet food (our lab likes the forthglade complementary)/fish oil/flax

Burns chicken and rice.

ProperVexed · 13/07/2022 21:30

Burns pork and potato.

I know it's not a popular choice on here but we feed Chappie on the recommendation of the Vet.

£15.25 for 24 cans in Asda.

Ours isn't a working working Lab though but we do gets lots of comments about what a fabulous condition she's in for her age Wink

Thank you all! I knew you would all have some suggestions.

I feed Black Angus by Markus Mühle, its cold pressed, but still a reasonable price. Mine does really well on it after having issues with other brands.

We are currently feeding Skinners Field and Trial along with Winalot sachets.

We use skinners too op.
Has the vet said there's something wrong with it?

PritiPatelsMaker · 13/07/2022 22:32

Could it be the Winslow causing the problems?

stratforduponavon · 13/07/2022 22:54

Its me that has noticed the scurvy skin. Dog is as happy as Larry and is very healthy bar the dandruff

*winalot

EdithStourton · 14/07/2022 07:13

It's hard to know if the scurf is due to the kibble, the wet food, an ingredient common to both or just to the dog's genetics. If he's washed a lot that could also have an impact.

If you want to see if the Winalot is the problem, you could try Skinner's F&T wet food. I've got two dogs on that plus Skinner's kibble, and their coats are lovely.

stratforduponavon · 14/07/2022 11:46

We dont wash him. We do brush him every day and could probably have another dog with the hair that has come off.

Maybe we could change the Winalot to Skinners wet food to see what happens.

I feed both my dogs, a cockapoo and a British bulldog raw dog food and their coats are so healthy.

blisstwins · 14/07/2022 12:05

I started giving mine a few sardines a couple of times a week and it has definitely helped his coat.

I also give them fish and I agree it really helps their coat.

My working Labradors do well on Chudleys Working Crunch, then out of the shooting season the older ones have Chudleys Classic, which is less energy-dense. I put in a tablespoon of something yummy with a drop of water and stir it all together. They all have superb coats and are never bathed, spot cleaning only and washing off mud. The youngest one is sensitive to chicken so has a different food, salmon -based, made by Pero.

I'll get slated for this because MN hates Royal Canin but our 12 year old has been on the RC Labrador specific food his whole life and his coat has always been very glossy, poos always perfectly formed and he looks nearer eight than 12

I also feed my almost 2yr old Lab on this as that’s what the breeder gave them and recommended. He looks great, shiny coat. I always see people slating and think I should change, but if it works it works.

SarahSissions · 14/07/2022 19:03

Arden grange do a white fish and potato that might be worth a try?

Narwhalelife · 14/07/2022 20:08

We have 2 labs, we feed Lilly’s kitchen, it is a bit pricey but I usually can find deal, money off coupons etc - have signed up to their website with about 4 different emails (me DH, both kids lol) but honestly they are so shiny and healthy looking!!
