Neutered male humping in season bitch????

Hi all,

I'm currently having a terrible time with my male neutered dog trying to hump my female that's in season.... His lipstick is coming out and everything!

I've spoken to the vets and they're claiming it's learned behaviour and there's no way she'll get pregnant, but he knew she was in season before we did and clearly reacts to her. ... Anyone else have experience of this??

We've got a newborn baby, so as cute as their puppies would be it's definitely not great timing!!

It's instinct I think - mine must have been neutered before the age of 12 months (rescue) but will still hump an in season bitch if there's one in the park. On one occasion it was the first time the owner realised her girl was probably coming into her first season.

Definitely no chance of pregnancy if he's neutered, but best to protect her from persistent sexual assault, as she will eventually get grumpy and may tell him off very firmly. Baby gates are your friend here.

Are you planning to spay her?

He may well actually do the deed fully with her but there'll be no puppies. You need to get her spayed, living with a bitch in season is hard going for the males even if they're neutered.

Yep, neutered dogs can mate with a bitch and tie with her. But she won't have puppies. For both their sakes keep them separate.

Is this her first season and you’re waiting for her to mature/develop fully before spaying?

It will be no fun for her putting up with this, is there anyone who can look after your male dog while she’s in season, it’ll be stressful for them both living together.

Yes we had this with our two young rescues. I found them tied 3 times - once in house, twice in garden.

Luckily it was just the one season, before she was spayed. She had a phantom pregnancy which was nerve-wracking despite knowing we'd had him castrated. They are still the most adoring, best of friends.

In season bitches can upset other females and neutered males, not just intact dogs. Try and keep them separate, not because she’ll get pregnant, but if he carries on annoying her she might snap and/or he’ll get frustrated.
book her in to get spayed as soon as you can after this season.

Thanks all, we'll keep them as separate as possible, she has snapped at him once but mostly she's been encouraging him!

The weather also seems to be calming them down and making it easier to manage. This is her second season and we plan to have puppies before getting her spayed, it's just wasn't good timing with a newborn. Next season we'll have a plan in place and people on standby!

They're currently sleeping next to each other in the sun! (Our male, Marty, is on the floor!)

Thanks again everyone!
