After dental surgery

Our Border Terrier had a GA today for a scale and polish and the vet said he had to have 5 teeth extracted.

He's home now but crying periodically, which is hard to hear. He's such a stoical little chap usually.

Five extractions sounds awful and he must be really uncomfortable. Just wondering if anyone knows if it's likely to improve quickly, or what I can do to help him? He's had scrambled egg for tea and ate the lot very quickly so I don't think he's feeling ill as such, but he's obviously very unhappy😢

It might be that the local anaesthetic is wearing off now, so he might be feeling a bit more uncomfortable. If he’s still the same tomorrow morning I would call your vet and ask if there’s any additional pain relief he can have.

Anaesthetic can make them cry btw.

They should have given him pain killers before he left, so if he’s still not right tomorrow then give them a phone.

How's he doing today?
My elderly girl has been through neutering, major surgery for a luxating patella, removal of a mast cell tumour... but nothing made her white / cry like having teeth out did! It didn't last long though and the vet gave us plenty of pain meds. she had wet food for quite some time afterwards.
Hope he feels better soon.

Thank you all for your replies.

He's a bit happier today, not crying anymore, just a bit subdued so I think things must be settling down.

I'm going to give him soft food for a few more days before we go back to the normal dried stuff (and I will probably soak that a bit at first to be on the safe side). Back to the vet for a follow up appointment on Friday.

Thanks again, it was so horrible hearing him last night and I just needed a bit of reassurance. He's generally such a tough little thing so he must have been feeling really uncomfortable.

Our dog had 6 teeth out last year, he was very subdued for the first 24 hours and seemed sore then he was back to himself but obviously very tender in his mouth for a good week or 2 afterwards. We were given paracetamol to give him daily for about a week I think. We were also advised to keep him on soft foods for 2 weeks and to keep checking the cavities to make sure they stayed clean and didn't become infected. We had a syringe with water in that we used to give them a little flush out. It was all healed amazingly after a couple of weeks it just seems horrible at the time xx
