I'm thinking of becoming a dog walker...

It's been burbling at the back of mind for a long time now... I only work part time currently and am about to leave that job and work supply for a while.
I wish to work for myself, adore dogs, (have a largeish breed myself) and spend many hours out in the countryside.
I am fairly sure there is a market for more dog walkers in our area!

I have canine aide training booked and am about to enroll on some courses, which while not essential at all will be good for my knowledge base and am hoping by about November I will be up to speed, insured and business/tax account and ready to advertise (I have a suitable vehicle already)

I'm not planning on making it a big business more a hobby that makes some money, and am rather more interested in offering a service to 'single walk' dogs (or pairs at a time if suitable). Having a nervous /reactive dog myself and having had to do a lot of work to integrate her with any other dogs, I know how difficult it is if your dog can't pack walk.

I'd also offer puppy visits.

Is there anything I'm missing that stands out? It will be a 'small time ' but hopefully professional enterprise.

I'm a dog walker! A few things:

You'll need insurance - it's dirt cheap but essential.
You'll also need to make sure your car insurance covers you for clients' dogs to travel in your car.
Pricing - solos need to be priced well in order for you to make a profit. Think about travel time, fuel, treats, poo bags and insurance costs and price yourself accordingly.

Are you planning to offer house sitting or boarding? My dog walker did and now has given that up as she finds it takes her away from her own home too much.

She is now finding that she is making a lot less money and as she has only just put up her walking rates feels she can’t increase those to cover the rise in petrol costs.

Bear in mind that regular clients might want walks and let outs at weekends and Bank Holidays when you might want to go out yourself.

I'm not planning on home boarding or house sitting no. Weekend walks..potentially yes on occasion (my own walker that I have used on and off in times of need does the odd bit of weekend care when needed so I know how useful that is)
I already have business insurance for my car and am definitely equipped for walking in all weathers.
I have been out with other dog walkers to get a feel for timings /travel and general management. I'm not against smaller 'pack' walks but because of my interest in behaviour I'd like to be able to offer some solo walks too.
