German Shepard just charged at me, terrifying!

Was walking in a park just now. Saw a man walking, then looked to my left and saw about 15 meters away, a black German Shepard charging towards me at full speed. Terrifying, l shouted to the owner, put him on a lead. Then the dog charged again. It's was very frightening, a fully grown big dog making a very fast bee line towards you. Time sped up, l sort of did a standing phoetal pose. I shouted again, put your fucking dog on a lead! The man said quietly, lm very sorry. My adrenalin was pumping, l was hyperventilating. Just posting to get it out of my system. It was a young dog but fully grown. Please keep big and young dogs on leads. If that happened to a young child, it would be awful!

OP, this is disgraceful. I don't know why so many people on here don't seem to realise that this can be utterly terrifying. It doesn't matter whether or not the dog actually did anything- it COULD have done and therefore is a scary and uneccessary situation. I had this happen to my then 6 month old baby in a pram - the dog leapt INTO the pram and went for his face. I had to wrestle him off my baby, screaming. I've also seen a dog testing across a field, ploughing into a 3 year old girl and knocking her flying- literally through the air. There is NO EXCUSE for allowing this to happen. The dog should have been on a lead.

So very many defensive dog owners on this thread who seem to be finding hard to accept that not everyone likes dogs running loose in a park.

My dog is trained. If he's allowed off lead then he is going to be off lead. He doesn't go near anyone else. So if him playing with a ball or my kids is a problem to someone... Its just that. Their problem.

Stellaris22 · 09/07/2022 15:48

The people getting angry about this dog being ‘out of control’, have you read the OP? They have refused to answer questions about what happened, admitted they let a child take a strong dog which killed a chicken, and refuses to admit if the dog was just doing recall back to its owner.

MarshaMelrose · 09/07/2022 15:51

This thread is a wind up. No way would a person who has trained dogs say that they should always be kept on a lead. 🤷

Agree. I have a big dog (lab). When he was a puppy his recall wasn’t great, but he was learning. How is he going to learn something he has never experienced? With patience and time he improved and he is now a very well behaved 2 1/2 year old. Yes he has frollocked around a park, but never threatened anyone and sorry, if you start shouting, swearing and shrieking like a banshee and waving your arms around, a young pup will think it’s a game and keep going. My uncle (trained dog handler) always said arms up, dog up, arms down, dog down.

Gosh, I do hope you’re able to overcome such a traumatic experience. I’m sure your near death experience will be the source of entertainment for many dinner parties to come.
Hand hold.

Somewhere on Dogsnet a traumatised German Shepherd is posting about the screaming, fetal position lady he met this morning, whilst running back to his owner ....

coffeecupsandfairylights · 09/07/2022 14:26

But either way it's OP's word against the dog owners'.

I wouldn't put my dog in a position where he had to be leashed and muzzled for life based on someone else's say-so.

Whether OP is being dramatic or not, the law is pretty clear.

But the OP’s word against the dog owners is... well...

I got frightened because a dog ran near me vs my dog ran nearby and they got frightened. That’s my point, that the OP’s version isn’t something that’s actually reasonable to find frightening.

You can’t just randomly claim a dog is dangerously out of control just because you get frightened by dogs being in the same park as you doing absolutely nothing to you.

no it isn't.....odd comment!!

very odd

Anxiernie · 09/07/2022 18:38

frighten a passer by, that's enough.

Some people are just frightened of dogs though, I could see that law being abused by people who just can't deal with dogs bring anywhere near them. "It barked while I was in the vicinity, this terrified me".

That’s why the reasonable bit is in there.

Keep Dogs on Leads.

No.

My sight hound (mongrel) needs to run, not walk, and not at my running pace. I do this in off lead dog areas.

I have seen people 'terrified' because they've chosen to walk through the area everyone runs their dogs and a dog runs past them (usually retrieving a ball).

You're a wind up merchant though so I don't know why I'm bothering.

Isaidnoalready · 09/07/2022 18:48

The first time the dog did it and was recalled that's normal but then the owner should have prevented the second instance because they are on notice OP is scared (or just batshit crazy) either way the dog owner shouldn't have let it happen the second time

GetThatHelmetOn · 09/07/2022 18:51

CuntAmongstThePigeons · 09/07/2022 10:55

What did the dog do when it reached you?

It doesn’t matter, what matters is some stupid owner is letting their dog intimidate people in a park and giving us all, dog owners a bad name.

personally, I don’t give a shit if Fido is friendly, a puppy or whatever, if the owner can’t control it it should be on a leash.

Stellaris22 · 09/07/2022 18:58

Have you read the thread helmet? This OP has admitted a dog they were responsible for was left with a child which then killed a chicken.

The dog didn’t seem to be out of control, it was having off lead exercise and being recalled by its owner.

turquoise1988 · 09/07/2022 19:02

If walking along minding your own business, an unfamiliar large German Shepherd (or any dog for that matter!) was bounding towards you, 99.9% of the population would be wary, even if not visibly recoiling.

Anyone asking, but what did the dog DO? is totally missing the point. It is irrelevant. An unfamiliar dog running towards you is terrifying for many people, even dog lovers!

I don't disagree that dogs should have the opportunity to be off lead whilst recall training, but this should be in appropriate spaces, e.g dog fields or similar. It is not appropriate to train in public parks or on walking trails. I will lose my mind if one more person with an out of control dog comments, "he's just being friendly!"

Next time, I will walk up to them, lick their face and tell them I'm super friendly, too.

Dogs are allowed to be off lead in a park. I took my dog to one today. We just went for a walk in the shade. We didn't play any games as it was a bit too hot but he was no more annoying to anyone else than me being with a person.

turquoise1988 · 09/07/2022 20:49

There's a difference between a trained dog walking alongside its owner and having excellent recall and a dog who is 'in training' that is all over the place.

I don't think that most people have a problem with the former. The issue is, too many dog owners think that there dog is in the former category, which can lead to other members of the public becoming irritated and uncomfortable, and understandably so.

tabulahrasa · 09/07/2022 21:12

“Anyone asking, but what did the dog DO? is totally missing the point. It is irrelevant. An unfamiliar dog running towards you is terrifying for many people, even dog lovers!”

It’s not irrelevant if that’s literally all it did - I mean, by that logic we should all be reporting people out jogging as being terrifying.

Dogs actually doing stuff to scare it even just annoy people in public spaces, yes, that’s an issue. But just running?

turquoise1988 · 09/07/2022 21:22

@tabulahrasa Did you really just compare a human being out jogging and a dog running towards you as the same sort of thing? 😂

No one is saying that dogs running towards you 'need reporting.' But the fact of the matter is, many people do not like it when dogs, and particularly large breeds, bound towards you. It's horrible. How are we to know if the dog is coming up to 'say hello' or is going to attempt to chew your face off?

I truly am a dog lover, but I wish people would realise that the situation like the OP has described is not 'harmless.'
