Feeding my dog - which dry food?

sunglassesonthetable · 05/07/2022 14:23

I currently feed my 2yr old Bedlington with Tails dry dog food. This is supplemented with portions of wet food in gravy/jelly.

Tails which is a mixed dry kibble type food comes by post on subscription basis. My dog who is not very food driven tbh has been happy on it. BUT it is expensive.

Budgets are tightening and I like to see if I could find a cheaper but good enough dry kibble type to replace it.

Any recommendations?

To don’t know if it’s cheaper but I feed my dog Burns biscuits (pork & pot) it’s £11 per bag & lasts over a month & I mix with a bit of cooked chicken for him so it’s not boring!

We’ve always used Chappie, recommended by vets.

PugWhiskers · 06/07/2022 09:13

I used to feed Orijen but it kept going up and up in price and also a couple of times I needed to get a new bag it was out of stock. I decided to switch to something more affordable and readily available in the UK. My dog is now on Autarky and I haven't noticed any adverse changes or effects in her as a result.

FeelinSpendy · 06/07/2022 09:14

Cangan or McAdams are good quality

Badger1970 · 06/07/2022 09:16

Mine are on Forthglade. It's cold pressed, and very energy dense so although it appears to be expensive, you give less and my two have both got brilliant coats on it.

This. I see this recommended a lot but it just pushes high protein/raw diets which isn't what domestic dogs generally need. They aren't wolves! It scores very low the foods that have years of scientific veterinary research behind it. The likes of tails are a bit faddy tbh. I use a university teaching practice so has vets with specialist nutritional knowledge. My dog is on royal canin and they say that's one of the better options.

My lab is on wainwrights dry dog food , made in uk and no nasty additives

She likes it

Blankscreen · 06/07/2022 09:37

We feed our 2 Wellness core.

On the website mentioned above it get 82%.

A 10kg bag is about £40.

Someof the other makes are more like £90 for a 10kilo bag.

princessrapunzel · 06/07/2022 10:40

My 2 are on wainwrights and are great on it. Not full of crap like alot of the cheapy brands are

Sunrisemouse · 06/07/2022 13:39

we use Arden grange premium and Forthglade (the one with brown rice) wet with a 80/20 ratio. Her poo used to be soft but is now firm ad smaller.

Rebelmcstreettuff · 06/07/2022 13:47

Mine is on Wainwright's too.
Hypoallergenic small kibble,he loves it and sometimes I get offers from pets at home.

livelyliz · 06/07/2022 13:53

You could go half and half with another dry food? It also helps the stomach with changeover to prevent loose stools.

sunglassesonthetable · 06/07/2022 14:02

That's a good idea!

Both our dogs are on James Wellbeloved. Never had any issues with it

WelcomeEverythingIsFine · 06/07/2022 14:19

Mine is on Millie’s wolf heart and they are very good. Have nutritionists you can call, I really like the service and doggo loves the food.

We are also on Chappie since ddog became diabetic. I always looked down my nose at it tbh and wouldn't have touched it before. It's been great for him and the vets feed it too.

We supplement with Burns white fish and rice, can't use Chappie cans any more because the fat content went up. When we did use the cans the ingredients were better than the vv expensive prescribed diabetic / pancreatitis formulas.

Girlintheframe · 06/07/2022 16:47

We use Millie's too. Never had any issues and you can buy small bags to try

liveforsummer · 06/07/2022 16:52

I wouldn't use chappie generally but it's great for dogs with certain medical conditions or prone to stomach upsets.

Glowinglights · 06/07/2022 16:58

Ours is on Millie Wolfheart too - works well for us, dog loves them all, easy pick-up poos , all good 👍

SirChenjins · 06/07/2022 17:00

Royal Canin, which is what he was weaned into. I’ve tried others based on better nutritional values but it’s the only kibble I can get him to eat, so I’ve given up trying to persuade him otherwise. I mix it in with wet food or cooked meat.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 06/07/2022 17:21

We feed Harringtons - wet and dry combined and he's healthy as anything on it.
