To claim on insurance or not ?

Hi

My dog has had an infected lesion on her tail, diagnosis is that it's a cyst that got bashed. A month on and we're £300 down and the problem may happen again which means she may have to have a partial tail amputation in the future.

To the problem. We have £90 excess on our policy and if we claim will our premium jump massively when we renew? I kind of think what's the point of pet insurance if I never claim and £200 is a lot of money. But not is we then pay £20 more a month next year.

Any experience you can share? TIA

Tbh I'd claim, I was in this sort of dilemma a couple of years ago, didn't claim then dog needed more treatment for something else a few months down the line - my premium only had a small jump

“We have £90 excess on our policy and if we claim will our premium jump massively when we renew?”

That very much depends who your insurance is with, some do that, some don’t.

Check reviews online and you’ll usually find that out.

Thank you for the replies.

You need to check because with some policies you MUST declare all treatments whether you claim or not, and they will ask the vet if you claim for the same issue down the line. If you haven't declared it they won't pay up when you want to claim!

We had to claim a few thousand in two separate claims in our dog’s first year. One for bowel obstruction and the second for Sunday night (v expensive out of hours) investigations into another possible bowel obstruction.

Thought PetPlan would tell us to sod off or put the premium up massively at renewal but it only increased by a very small amount.

A couple of years ago my dog had a £2000 op and our premium went up by £4 a month on the next renewal, then reduced by £6 a month on the renewal after that, if that helps.

BiteyShark · 26/06/2022 16:38

My premium (petplan) rises every year based on age of the dog not on claims (which is a good job really given the number of claims we have had every year).

We claimed over £4000 when one of ours was under 1 for a kidney removal.
She's now 5, just claimed another £3500 last year for ACL surgery.... Premiums are still reasonable.

Most premiums go up based on age, I think.

Personally I would claim, otherwise what's the point in paying for insurance?

Thanks all. This is really helpful.

I work in the industry, apparently pet insurance doesn't increase premiums based on claim history. We would always advise claim if you can

I would claim. Premiums go up based on age.
