Fleas! Can't treat dog for another 3 weeks...

Poor ddog has fleas. I stupidly used a non-prescription treatment which didn't kill them off and the vet has said they are now possibly resistant and I can't treat him again for 3 weeks. I gave him a bath with animology flea and tick shampoo, which has got rid of the poo and have seen a couple of fleas on him which are not moving, so I assume they are dead. I've had a good hoover round and have washed his beds. Indorex Defence Spray was delivered today. On Saturday I am planning to hoover again then spray everywhere, wash bedding again and give dog another bath. Will this be enough? Will it be a problem that I can't treat him again for another few weeks? I'm so cross with myself! Tell me it's not going to be as bad as the internet says. I've only had a couple of bites but DP has told me eggs can live in the carpet for months and I'm worried!

Mumsnet isn’t a fan but pennyroyal can help. Get some dried, make a tea and wash down or spray you dog. Also scatter around and vacuum later. It only lasts a little so do it every few days.

Don’t use if anyone or anything is pregnant.

What over the counter product did you use, do you use Frontline spot on or spray? There have been some issues with resistance to Frontline but you don’t have to wait three weeks to treat again. Ask your vet for something oral eg. Nexguard or Simparica and repeat monthly for at least six months. Frontline isn't absorbed systemically so an oral product soon after is safe.

Also fleas can transmit tapeworm so I would advise to deworm as well.

I've never heard of having to wait a whole month before treating again, especially if it's with a different product.

I used Advantage. I actually used it twice in a fortnight as one vet said that was ok then the next vet said I can't use it again for a month (that was a week ago). Flea watch today and I've spotted another of the buggers so we're not out of the woods.

Pretty sure you can use nexguard and other oral treatments with advantage. Give your vet a call and ask.

In another 3 weeks your house will be infested!

I switched from Advantage to Bravecto, never had an issue again. I use Indorex twice a year regardless, just in case.

Oh god we had a horrendous flea problem when we moved into our house, despite all our pets being treated monthly! The previous owners had cats so we think they left some little biting friends behind.

We ended up bathing three cats and a dog, giving them all a Capstar each (MAGIC TABLETS), then shut the cats in the bathroom and the dog in the ensuite for an hour until all the fleas died and dropped off them (it was truly disgusting), whilst we hoovered everything inch of the house, vacuum-packed all our clothes and bedding to decant straight into a boil wash, then got a pest control company in, which did the job. It was a miserable existence for weeks, though.
