When do you know its time?

We have a 13 year old greyhound who we adopted 7 years ago and who we love to bits. Her mobility started to decline about 6 months ago and her walks have been getting gradually shorter and shorter during this time. Unfortunately she fell down the stairs 3 weeks ago (she was spooked by a car alarm and tried to escape upstairs) and landed on her rear with her hind legs up near her ears. She was obviously really hurt and crying out in pain. My DH had to carry her to her bed. We took her to the vet who gave her some painkillers and told us that her left hip joint is very weak. She has improved a bit but has not managed to walk any further than about 100 yards down the road before she starts whimpering. We have now stopped walking her and she can just about potter around the garden although she is limping quite badly and struggles to get up from lying down.

I am beginning to wonder if we might have to make the difficult decision about whether it is time to let her go. When do you know? I would hate to think she is in constant pain although she is still eating well and seems to enjoy her food.

I am heartbroken. Her sparkle seems to have gone and I can't remember the last time she looked happy and wagged her tail.

Please no judgement. She is our first dog and we don't know what to do for the best. The vet has not suggested any further treatment options.

Your DH being with her must’ve been so hard for him but will have meant everything to her, to have a friendly face to leave with.
you sound like the best of owners xx

I'm so, so sorry for your loss. Dogs are family and they leave a huge hole in our lives when they die.

We lost our beautiful collie cross, Lucy, just over a month ago and I found a lot of comfort in the posts here - and many hand holds. It meant so much.

Do what you need to do to look after your heart. Grief is the price we pay for love - and with our dogs living comparatively short lives to us, it is the unspoken deal we sign up to when we open our homes and hearts to our beloved pets.

But I can say, some weeks on, with our loss still fresh, I find myself smiling when I think of her. I do believe that they live on in our hearts. That love lives on. A hand hold from me. 💐

It was hard for him - it's the first time I have ever seen him really cry (proper sobbing😢) She wasn't the easiest dog to carry either with her long dangly legs!
Thank you for all your lovely messages

I’m so very sorry to hear this, she had your DH at the end taking care of her, she will have felt safe and so loved, I hope you find some comfort in that.

So very sorry for your loss. I had to have my old boy PTS last night. Its the hardest, most heartbreaking thing letting them go

MyGirlDaisy · 08/07/2022 18:00

I am so very sorry. Our greyhound very suddenly lost the use of his back legs aged 11 1/2 and we had to let him go that day. It’s absolutely heartbreaking and I really feel for you. X

Thank you all for your kind messages and support. It is comforting to know that I'm not alone but also sad that so many of us have had to experience this grief. Flowers to all. As PP upthread said it is the price we pay for loving them xx
