Dog anti-slip socks

I’m investigating anti-slip socks for my elderly dog who is starting to lose traction on hard floors and has fallen a couple of times recently.

A quick Google shows lots of options but I wondered if anyone has any specific recommendations for options that:

  1. Actually stay on, both because he’s not going to like them initially and don’t want him to just be able to wiggle out of them and because he is still quite active and prone to the zoomies.
  2. suitable for indoor and outdoor use. He wouldn’t need to wear them out on walks but he enjoys pottering in and out of the garden all day. Realistically I’m not going to be able to put them on and off every time he fancies going to eyeball a pigeon.
  3. suitable for pointy toes, he’s a long dog and most size guides think he will have much wider feet for his foot length than he actually does.
Thank you!

I clip the fur in between the pads,( you can ask a groomer of vet to do it) and it improves their grip rather than using socks

Thank you, I can see how that would work for a hairy hound but he doesn’t really have any toe hair so unlikely to have much effect. He’s under vet care for early stages of arthritis but just seems to need a bit of help keeping his back end underneath him when on tiles!

Hmm, we're just looking for non-slip rugs for the downstairs - in front of the dog bed, in front of the sofa and at the entrance - as my girl is arthritic and slipping is going to keep hurting her as she skitters when she jumps on the sofa or gets excited about going out.

Not sure I'd put her through wearing socks all the time - she's had to have shoes on before when she had stitches in two paws and she detested it.

Could you lay non-slip rugs in key areas instead? Aesthestics of the house are great, but it would be easier and maybe a bit kinder.

Yes, I’ve thought about rugs/runners too but the whole of my ground floor is hard floors so a large surface area to cover and the layout does mean that he crosses most rooms to go anywhere. We do have a few rugs that he just tends to ruck up when he’s charging around. They are more decorative rather than the sticky backed ones though so something to think about.

I do think he’ll hate the socks and intend to work up to him wearing them over shorter stretches but just so worried he’s going to hurt himself!

We got our dog some for hillwalking. They are like the ruffwear ones but cheaper, I just can't remember the brand but they were similar to these www.vetsend.co.uk/trixie-walker-active-protective-boots

He hated wearing them at first and walked really funnily but soon got used to them. They stayed on really well too.

My dog would just eat these 🤣

I second the suggestion of rugs with rubber suction etc. underneath so he can't slip and skid.

Here’s my elderly spaniel sporting his socks! They lasted about 5 minutes before he pulled them off.

Might be a silly question but do you mop your floors quite regularly? I didn’t realise how slippery hoovering made my laminate flooring. If I mop it straight after it seems to make a difference.

Tried rugs but the dog just rucks them all up then I trip over them.

Anyway I have two packs of grip socks if you’d like them to try. More than happy to post them to you if you PM me your address.

My dog's breeder recommended these.

That is so kind, thank you but I actually just ordered some! Thought I might as well just get that idea out of the way and if it’s a complete no-go I can get to work on sticking rugs to everything in sight!

It’s a nightmare isn’t it! Mind you mine doesn’t help himself by charging around every time he thinks he’s missing out on something. Good luck with the socks.

We have these for our rugs and they work well.

Our black lab had neuropathy in his back leg and later on his front and we had cheap rubber backed washable runners in a neutral colour on all the areas in the house that were risky for him - smooth floors. Towards the end for our boy he seemed to have lost his spatial awareness and would only walk on the rugs I'd often have to guide him from rug to rug

Floralnomad · 22/06/2022 22:36

When my sister had this issue with her elderly dog she just put down loads of anti slip runner type rugs so the dog had a path to all the places it needed to go - looked a bit odd but did the trick . Her dog would have had your hand off if you’d attempted to put socks on her .

Wolfiefan · 22/06/2022 22:39

I wouldn’t put anything on feet if it can be avoided. Not for long periods. Runners and rugs are the answer.

I forgot to say we got the mats from IKEA
