How to help her after major surgery...

Hello all,

My poor 10 month old pup had to have emergency surgery yesterday after eating something she shouldn't have and impacting her intestine.

She is home now and I just dont know how to help her. She hasn't eaten or drank any water...we have painkillers but struggling to get them down her. She seems insistant on lying on the hard floor on her (massive!) wound too which must just be agony

I dont know what to do. She is very quiet and a understandably a bit shakey. I think we are all still in shock.

any advice on how to make this easier for her?

tia

Oh poor thing!

I'd be most concerned about her not drinking. If she hasn't had any fluids by lunchtime I'd be seriously considering taking her back to the vets.

I would call them when they open and explain youre worried about how she's doing. They may say bring her in but will certainly give some advice and probably want to follow up with you later today.

Thank you. She is going back to the vets today anyway but I have been up most of the night with her and she's just so uncomfortable in the meantime. I will ring and see if we can bring the appointment forward

We had a thin mattress (encased in a duvet cover) on the floor with puppy pads on it. I would sit down there with my cuppa!

Oh we had exactly the same thing when ours was one, he perked up after a while and as he absolutely hated the cone, we used old T-shirts instead, could it be that it's the cone that makes her miserable? Hope she feels better soon

When my dogs are sick or recovering we -
Mix some water into a favourite wet food for hydration.
Play dog tv on youtube, mine like vidoes of goats and sheep for some reason.
We make a blanket nest and wrap so cone can be removed (only with supervision)
The heat may be the reason for laying on a hard floor - have you got a padded cooling mat?

We hide meds in either cream cheese or something like spam where you can push the pill inside.

I add a splash of milk to water to encourage them to drink. We have had similar regrettable eating incidents so I know how miserable it is. The vet can give long lasting injections for pain relief if you can’t get tablets down.
