Undescended testicle - 8 month old pup

Hi I’m going to chat to our vet next week but wanted to hear if anyone has experience of their puppy only having one testicle descended with regards to neutering ?
we do plan on getting him neutered but was going to wait until he’s fully grown . He’s a golden retriever.
i hadn’t really thought about it being an issue but I heard it can increase cancer risks ?
i have mostly been thinking about testicles this week it seems 🤔
thanks in advance

Our 14 month old Labrador was neutered 3 weeks ago. One of his testicles was undescended and the vet had advised us to have it done sooner rather than later as there problems re cancer and strangulation of organs etc. the op was a bit more complex as they had to search for the testicle and our poor boy had a 7/8 inch wound and dissolving stitches.

Apart from the first night of whimpering and a couple of yelps at twinges we think, he was fine. He's fully recovered now and back to his old playful self - maybe he's slightly calmer too.

Thank you and happy to hear your boy is recovering well

Undescended testicles do need to be removed but there is no rush. It is very unlikely that it will become cancerous in the short term.

I have had two dogs with undescended testicles. Both had them removed at 2 years of age. One I waited until they had to have a ga for another matter and did it at the same time.

There is absolutely no need to remove the descended testicle at all. Both my guys had one ball just to give them some testosterone.

Thanks that’s really helpful

My dog is two and has an undescended testicle. We will have it removed some time this summer. He's a real wuss and the vet assured me that he will have an ultrasound to locate the testicle rather than just cut him open and rummage around.
I don't know how true this is but I have been advised that the undescended testicle can result in excess hormone production which can cause aggression. Ddog does have some challenging behaviours, definitely worse in recent months so who knows if that is the cause.

MrsSkrebensky It is not true that undescended testicles cause more hormones. Undescended hormones usually have LESS hormones so some dogs may be fear reactive.

That is why it may be a good idea to leave the remaining descended testicle.

My dog had an undescended testicle, he was neutered at 2 without issue. I was advised that the wound might be larger than normal but luckily the testicle was easily located and removed.
We waited until he was 2 on the advice of our vet and trainer as he was fear reactive.

My friend’s dog had both testicles undescended, he had surgery at around 15 months to remove them, all very straightforward and he recovered quickly.

Thanks all for the replies , very reassuring
