Disposal of poo!!

sasparilla1 · 16/06/2022 15:27

Sorry for the lovely subject......

We have 2 dogs and have recently, and finally, moved into our own home after renting for a few years.

Has anyone found a decent system for disposing of poo that involve just throwing it in the bin? We are throwing it in the bin, although in biodegradable poo bags. But 2 dogs produce a fair bit, even though they're small dogs!

Any that we collect from nearby is shovelled, not bagged, and goes down the outside loo.
Any bagged poo goes into one of the dog poo bins in the village.

Beamur · 16/06/2022 15:32

I put ours into any (public) bin if we pass one. Or take it home, put in discrete location near to Wheely bin. When I take out the household rubbish, I add the poo bags and then securely tie up and put in Wheely bin.

I used a kitchen caddy. I bagged the garden poo and put it in the caddy (that had a liner bag in it) Caddy lived outside. Then when full, bagged and binned in either the wheelie bin or a dog poo bin when we went out for a walk. No smell and we had 5 dogs at one point!

pigsDOfly · 16/06/2022 15:42

I have a small dog who usually only poos once a day, occasionally twice.

If we're out and there's a poo bin available I'll put it in there, in a bag obviously. Otherwise it goes into a biodegradable bag and is put into my regular rubbish bin.

TunaSalad · 16/06/2022 15:48

My large dog poos 3 times a day and I double bag it in biodegradable bags and put it in the wheelie bin. Never noticed a smell.

ponkydonkey · 16/06/2022 15:48

We get for note bin collections, my wheelie bin is in the sun all day... it just stinks to high heaven
So no idea what else I can do with it.. I might have to start flushing it down the loo 😱

ponkydonkey · 16/06/2022 15:49

Fortnightly bin collection not a note!

It is a MLM but I was given a sample of this (I don't sell it!), and it's really good. I'm thinking of getting some, despite being anti-MLM

There is this. We did have neighbours who tried something similar. It was less than successful and the husband earned huge brownie points when he had to dig it out and disposed of it.

Can you flush it down the loo? I flush my babies poohs if they are solid enough

HappyCup · 16/06/2022 16:23

Raw feeding makes really tiny, once a day, solid poos. My dog (very handily!) saves it for a walk so I can dispose of the poo bag while we’re out.

Trulyweird1 · 16/06/2022 16:28

We tried a dog poop digester in the garden, but even as a puppy, my lab produced more than it could digest quickly.
Now I just bag it as they do it in the garden and deliver it to our nearest poop bin next time we are out..

WaltzingToWalsingham · 16/06/2022 16:38

I dont think you're supposed to put dog (or cat) poo down the loo, in the UK anyway. I believe our somewhat elderly sewage treatment system doesn't reliably kill parasites that may be found in pet faeces, such as Toxoplasmosis, so there is the possibility of them finding their way into the drinking water system.

I'm not sure what the answer is, though. I personally just bag it and bin it, but there must be a better way of dealing with it!

You really shouldn't dispose of animal faeces in public sewers - the sewerage systems aren't designed to remove pathogens from dog / cat poo:

One of my dogs is raw fed. She poos at least three times a day, albeit solid ones but definitely not tiny!!

Noo, please don't do this. You shouldn't flush animal poo down the loo.

We just bag it up and put it in the bin and I do the same for the cat poos from the litter trays - we have one dog and three indoor cats and it's never been an issue.

GuyFawkesDay · 16/06/2022 17:20

I bag up in biodegradable bags and drop it off in the dog poo bin as we go past.

I do love next to a park so I have been known to get a few filled at home poo bags and drop them into the bin as it gets emptied at least x2 a week and my bin is fortnightly so it stinks in summer if I put the dog poo bags in there!

Very much depends on the dog. For my JRT it made several liquid poos a day, and a grumbling tummy loud enough to wake us up in the night!

Yodaisawally · 16/06/2022 17:29

As many public poo bins as I can, even more so in summer. We are on twice weekly black bins and it's a bit grim.

TranquilBlue · 16/06/2022 17:55

We have an old style dustbin at the far end of our garden, behind the shed, that I double line with compostable bin liners. We go out with the dogs every time, so it’s immediately bagged using compostable poo bags and put in there, then we transfer the bin liner into the wheelie when we put the bins out for collection.

Brownlongearedbat · 17/06/2022 13:36

As a caveat both my dogs are small, so small poos, but....in the garden I have a lidded plastic nappy bucket which has some holes drilled in the bottom. It lives in a shady discrete spot. All garden poos are shoveled in there, with a small shovel full of spent compost added on top every now and then. The contents don't smell and go a bit crumbly. When it's about three quarters full I dig a hole at the back of a border and bury the contents. Apart from the most recent bit it doesn't look like poo anymore, certainly doesn't smell and may even be good for the shrubs!
My biggest problem is dog wee burning the lawn. I keep 3 watering cans on standby to soak where the dogs pee but you can never get them all.

wetotter · 17/06/2022 13:49

DDog (small terrier) prefers to poo away from home, so it's bagged up and put in a bin whilst we're out - one specifically for dog muck when there are separate ones.

When at home, it gets bagged and then put outdoors in a bag next to the bin, so it doesn't stink the bin out - they seem to just dry without smelling unless in a warm and sealed place. Then the bag goes in to the rest of the rubbish when the bins go out.

Friend has a labrador and one of those doggy earth loo thingies and is happy with it. And his poos are considerably bigger than mine produces.

This was our method of choice too 😂

ScattyHattie · 23/06/2022 11:24

I either put bagged poo public bin while out and have empty dog food sack in the glass bin to put it and that goes into the household waste bin on collection day . I had a galvanized bin in garden at one time but forgot it when we moved. It doesn't smell much until you open the bin as lid has reasonable seal, I guess could try sticking those charcoal absorber things on the underside of lid if is an issue.
