What do we do?

Our nearly 4 year old GSD dog is aggressive with people he doesn't know. We have been sending him to training for 2 years every week but in terms of the aggression towards others, no further forward.

We have a 12 day old baby at home - Dog is fine with baby and never left on his own but hasn't been fully himself since he arrived.

Just had Amazon driver deliver and he managed to slip through door and went for the driver. He broke skin. The Amazon driver was OK. We helped clean wound etc but he didn't say anything.

He also went for dog trainer when she collected him last week - same situation.

Be cute now, the only other instance has been with my mums gardener about 6/7 months ago.

Especially with a newborn we don't think we can keep him now. Could anyone advise the following:-

  1. Where do we stand liability wise? Can the Amazon driver do anything?
  1. Should we be contacting anyone this evening I.e. vets?
  1. Is the best option going to be to put him down or do we have any hope rehoming him?
  1. If we decide to put him down how do we do this and how quickly do we act?

Have gsd hates strangers and other dogs but adores children can't get enough of them.

Gsd are natural protectors and that's what he/she is doing protecting their environment.

I think its more how YOU deal with their behaviour putting a dog down for protecting you is ridiculous if you feel that then I would suggest to rehome him/her to a more suitable owner

The dog was dangerous. There are plenty of dogs that aren't that need a home. A dog that bites the Amazon delivery driver shouldn't be in a home with a baby or rehomed. This is why there are so many dog attacks. The op did the right thing. Sad as it is

I'm not sure what rescue you work in or what context of animal training you have. However some dogs like this do get rehomed and end up as working dogs and live out a happy life. PTS is a very last resort.

I work in animal rescue and it is irresponsible to rehome a large breed dog with an erratic bite history.

What work would this dog do? Working dogs need to be highly trained and reliable, usually from a young age.

Sadly this dog would either be left in kennels or passed around from home to home, exacerbating the situation, putting others in danger, and highly unfair on the dog.

PTS, falling asleep whilst calm and surrounded by the people he loved? 100% the kindest thing for him.

You can train it all you want but with a 2 bite(unprovoked) history, you could never safely put it into a home.

A really hard, but ultimately responsible and kind decision to make.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Having had to have a beloved pet PTS very recently, he will have quietly and gently slipped away. You genuinely had no choice

Every dog should be given a chance this poor baby was brought straight to the slaughter house they didn't even try!

They did try. For years.

I think you are very likely to hear from the driver who was bitten. Do you have dog insurance? Some breeds aren't covered even then for biting especially with a previous history. I do think you made the right decision for your dog and family.Flowers

It's a dog that's bitten unprovoked. Do you think there are people lining up to re-home large dangerous dogs?

Even if it bit once and they took it straight to be pts, that's still ok. Why does it deserve a chance? A dog that bites will forever be a risk and rehoming it is just passing the problem on to someone else.
