Combing through our finances and wondering if we are average for pet stuff.

Food - £40pm (He has the Butternut boxes which I know are expensive but everything else we've tried he refuses after a few days🙄)
Insurance - £15pm
Health - £10pm average for flea treatment/wormer.
Plus maybe £10-20 on new bits and pieces like toys, treats etc.

I groom him myself so he just has a clip once or twice a year at £50 a pop. Boosters £60 a year.

How does everyone else compare?

Obviously this depends a bit on size of dog - we have a medium size dog 5 yr old
food - £70 per month
insurance - £63 per month
grooming - £50 every 6 weeks
boosters - £75 yearly
new harness last month £60
bits and bobs/ treats etc £20 per month
kennels - x3 per year up to 4 weeks £1000

Mindymomo · 13/06/2022 15:09

My 4 year old border collie eats Butternut Box, 21 meals with bone broth £73 every 3 weeks. Topped up with some dry food, £10 per month.
Insurance £20.
flea, tick and worm treatment about £4 per month, plus £11 vet prescrIption every 6 months.
vet injections and check up, plus couple of visits each year, so far, say £20 per month.
treats, toys, poo bags, £20 per month.

i reckon about £1,200 per year.

Whoops pressed send too soon!
Should have said 'not sure I want to think about how much I spend 🤣'

I have 2 dogs, one is big and the other is big, big!
Raw food £160-£180
Insurance £45
Monthly librela for one £80
Dog walker £40
Puppy play £20
Dog training £50
Other bits- yak chews etc £30

NetflixAndSauvignonBlanc · 13/06/2022 15:46

Not sure I want to play this game...

£4,650 a year made up as follows:
£620 insurance (working dog)
£200 wormer/flea treatments
£60 vaccinations
£450 food
£3,320 dog walker (2 walks a day on days when my husband and I are both working)

That's about £390 a month.

Hotdogsforsale · 13/06/2022 15:46

I've just worked this out for mine while updating the household budget. I spend £300 per month for 2 greyhounds. That's food, treats, insurance, flea/worm/booster subs.

Most months something else comes up, e.g dog sitter/ kennel stay, or needing some kind of equipment or medical supply. So easily another £50 or more.

If I'd have known how much it'd cost, I'd probably have just got one dog!

coffeecupsandfairylights · 13/06/2022 15:53

Food - £40 per month.
Vaccinations - £35 per year.
Flea/worm - approx. £20 every three months.
Insurance - £37 per month.
Treats/chews - maybe £15 per month.

So on average about £100 a month. I'm a dog walker so he comes to work with me and we take him with us on holidays.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 13/06/2022 15:56

I'm not playing this game 🤣 I do not want to know!!!
More than I should!

EdithStourton · 13/06/2022 18:12

The essentials, for two medium sized dogs:
Food: 110
Vet club (for boosters and flea treatment): 25
And now and then we cough up for a vet treatment - so far this has worked out at about £10/month over more than 30 years of dog lifetime, IYSWIM.

The extras:
Fuel, for more exciting walks and travel to training: 60 (possibly more)
Training: 150 (plus the odd extra outlay for e.g. stock training course)
Kit: 5
Treats: 10
Kennels: 35 (averaged)

And that's not counting the vast array of outdoor clothing that I own...

So about £200 per month per dog. They are one of my major hobbies. DH runs with them as well ('no point going for a run without a dog!') but I'm not telling him the true scale of the expense!

Bigblackandreddog · 13/06/2022 21:16

For 3 large dogs I’m currently spending:

£125 insurance.
£100 food.
£100 medication for broken dog.
£20 treats etc.

No grooming costs as I do that myself thankfully!

Im so tempted to cancel the insurance but knowing my luck all 3 would get injured within the first month!

EcoCustard · 13/06/2022 21:41

2 spaniels aged 12.5yrs, for both, monthly.
food is a mix of Butternut Box ( they love it), raw meat from butcher & dried and biscuits. £40-60 a month.
flea/wormer treatment averages £10.
groomer 3-4 times a year averages £25.
No insurance as one is prohibitively expensive ( nigh on impossible but doesn’t require regular treatment) to insure due to a rare condition. We used to pay into an account and use that, and add whatever is needed if and when for treatments like grass seeds etc or it comes out of the monthly pot.

Kennels if we go away any don’t/can’t take them is £210 for a week (or was) likely gone up.
regular walks further a field are factored in and often family days, NT property, forest, marsh trails etc. Basic training as pups and kept up by me, so no longer a cost. Agility no more either due to age. Don’t have lots of toys anymore either.
i spent a fortune in their younger years, less so now on stuff. My dogs are my world, my hobby, walking them, playing, don’t have any others 😅

Girlintheframe · 14/06/2022 04:40

I feel like we pay a fortune! Yearly

£450 treats
540 Insurance
£150 worming/tick treatment
£240- 300 treats/balls/toys/shampoo/activities
£1800 - 2400 daycare

Thankfully I'm changing job soon so daycare costa will reduce to around £1000

Girlintheframe · 14/06/2022 04:41

Gosh that's not including
Vaccinations and all the 'not worth claim for' vet trips we have!

hattie43 · 14/06/2022 05:28
