Deep garden pond & Labrador puppy

So we have a very deep walled and railed pond. The walls are only 1ft high at their lowest point. Water libel is about 6ins down on the pond side.
It's netted against herons and has flower pots weighing down the nets.
We got lucky yesterday as we were all outside when she jumped/climbed in. Luckily she took a pot with her (disappeared into the depths) so there was some swimming space and we hauled her out quickly.
She's 14 weeks old, the pond is massive and can't be made more secure easily and she loves water generally.
So do I take the net off to be safer; have some sort of ramp put in so she can get out if she does it again and is unobserved? Or in your experience is this going to be a) a magnet and b) a death trap?

Keep pup away and supervise her in the garden
Teach her it’s not somewhere she can go, you may need to keep her on a lead or long line to reinforce that

We have just filled in a deep pond because the lab puppy was too attracted to it. Mainly the stones around the edge that needed “rescuing”. But it was too much of a risk. The net was getting torn and was a danger. It was 12ft long and 6-7ft deep. Had been there 20+ years and ignored by previous labs.

You'll have to supervise constantly around it, or fence it off somehow.

Our dog was also fascinated by the pond as a puppy. Now he's older he likes to lay in the waterfall on hot days 🙄

Never leave a dog unsupervised in your garden not just because of the pond but because of dog theft.

I have a lab and I know a pond would be the most tempting thing ever especially after a walk on a warm day or when she’s got hot from chasing the ball. I don’t think any amount of training would 100% stop my dog jumping in a pond and so if it were mine I would get it filled in. If your pond is massive and this isn’t an option then yeah perhaps look into ways of making it safe but I don’t know if ponds can be safe- if they accidentally inhale or swallow pond water, could that be dangerous for them? My dog jumped into a random pond once and ended up covered in a rash from the stagnant water

We had to fill our pond in as our golden retriever puppy kept jumping in. I hoped he’d grow out of it, but he kept it up for several months and in the end I had to agree to losing the pond. My husband had wanted to get rid of the pond anyway (it was here when we moved in), but I loved it so had been resisting.

If you're unwilling to fill it in, you either need to fence it off, use a metal tether to restrict her movement, or constantly supervise her.

So many dogs drown in water - it's just not a risk I would ever take.

Haus1234 · 12/06/2022 08:17

Could you put a metal grate over it rather than a net?

AlwaysLatte · 12/06/2022 08:20

Put a fence around it. We have a stream in the garden and fenced it all off when I was pregnant with our first. It's still fenced now 14 years later and is useful for only allowing our Labrador supervised dips!

Panamii · 12/06/2022 08:23

Put a ramp in and teach her how to get out. A ramp is useful for wildlife too.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 12/06/2022 08:25

Thank you all for the advice especially to those of you with experience of this. We inherited it from the previous owners and it's a massive faff so I'll happily get rid. Will just have to fence/supervise until we can.
A long line isn't an option due to the layout of the garden. Re puppy theft, pond aside it's a big garden and very secure so I'd like her to have access to potter around especially if we are close by. We don't go out and leave her in the garden.

Can you get a pool alarm type thing to alert you when she gets within a certain distance?
