Should we go away last minute with 7 month old pup?

Need you advice doggy friends, asap!

Found a cheap dog friendly air bnb by the sea last minute, looks perfect.
Would be going tomorrow, for 2 nights.

It's about a 2 hr drive from us.
We have Lab pup 7 months old, and DD 8 yrs old.

We are super keen as never got away in half term and havent been anywhere for AGES. No significant holidays since Covid.

But i am worried about taking a ypung pup (who is a bit of a chewer!) to an air b n b

Worried about what she may do to the air bnb, how/where she'll sleep (would take crate), the journey (she's not done that long in the car) and just all the faff of packing everything last minute for pup, and us etc.

Am I over thinking (usually I am!!)
Should we just go and be spontaneous and not worry? If we didnt have pup we would go for sure.

BnB said 'furry friends welcome'

Take crate, towels, blankets, toys and go for it.

Oh and water for the journey, with something to chew on.

Have fun!

ErrolTheDragon · 09/06/2022 15:58

Is she happy to sleep in the crate?

ErrolTheDragon · 09/06/2022 15:59

I wouldn't have thought 2 hrs drive would be a problem at all, assuming she's usually a good traveller.

Bundaberg84 · 09/06/2022 16:00

Well, there will be a time where you find out how good your dog behaves when traveling, and 7 months should be fine. I think mine was 6 months old when we went to a small holiday, maybe 2-3h drive from our home. She did well. I think it is actually part of training your dog. I have a good insurance though ;)

Yes she sleeps in her crate every night at home, downstairs.

Was thinking see how she does there downstairs, but can bring crate up to our room if she's unsettled?

We are going away at the weekend to the seaside with our pugs. One of them is younger than yours OP.
Taking her crate and lots of chews with us as her teeth are like needles.
We are really looking forward to it

LBF2020 · 09/06/2022 16:05

Yes, I would definitely go (even with my adolescent goldie 😂)
If you have lots of beach walks planned and with the change of environment etc your pup should be knackered and won't want to chew anything.
Have a lovely time 😊

Yamyam13 · 09/06/2022 16:06

Thanks all xxx
You are convincing me, I just needed that bit of reassurance. I am 90% gonna book it...

That all sounds good. It's probably best to try to keep things as near normal as possible, so if she normally sleeps in her crate downstairs stick with that, do whatever you normally do at bedtime not extra fuss iyswim.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 09/06/2022 16:17

Go for it! We took our beagle away at a similar age and he behaved impeccably.

certainshepherdpups · 09/06/2022 16:18

We took our pup away for the first time when he was 9 months old. He was an absolute superstar during the long car journey, in our accommodation, and elsewhere. We were supposed to go on holiday when he was 6 months old but ended up having to cancel (for reasons not related to the dog) and I was actually relieved because I didn’t think he was quite ready. But he might have been completely fine.

In your shoes I would give it a go. A two hour drive isn’t very long if she’s generally O.K. in the car. And two nights away is also a reasonable amount of time. Even if she doesn’t behave that well, it will only be for two days! 😉

tizwozliz · 09/06/2022 16:21

We went to an Airbnb when our lab pup was around 5 months, chewing things she shouldn't wasn't an issue (and she was still having occasional nibbles on furniture and cushions at home at that age). We had the crate in the bedroom with us, but our pup has never been a good overnight sleeper. She slept through every night when we were away.

Yamyam13 · 09/06/2022 18:40

Thanks to all for the suggestions and moral support/encouragement!

Turns out genius me misunderstood Air BnB and it's only available for one night which makes it pretty expensive for less than 24 hours.
So we are going to go for the day instead and get up super early.

BUT thank you as I feel so much more confident for going away now, which we are doing in the Summer.

Thanks Canine Crew!

Just had to come back here to say that in the most predictable way, having stated she sleeps well in her crate earlier in this thread.. tonight she woke up at 1am, took her out, she had a bery runny pooh, then she's taken an hour to resettle in her crate. I had to sot with stroke her... felt like we went back 4 months.
I knew it was a bad idea writing the words 'she sleeps in her crate every night' !!!

Classic Kiss of death'

^ that is so typical 😆Same when I say "hey, did you notice, our cat has been very lovely, no mouse or other critter in our house in the last couple of weeks". Guess what sound you wake up to at 3 am this night?

Spanielsarepainless · 10/06/2022 17:12

We took our five months old on a five hour drive (furthest he had been previously was half an hour). Two stops, crate in cottage at night. Doing it all again in a month but for four nights. Took his chewy toys and it was great.

Bundaberg84 · 10/06/2022 18:24

I can't believe it. Cat just brought in a mouse. I will never say, think or write that sentence again.

They are unbelievable arent they?! They just KNOW we even thought it let alone wrote it down!
My pup is quite unsettled again tonight and wont even settle in her crate for the first time since her first night home! I'm wondering if it's getting too warm for her?
Not sure what to do.. am tryi g again with no bedding.. though a part of me is wondering if she's best off in the kitchen where she can choose between her bed and the cooler floor.
We leave her there when we pop out in the day but she's never spent a night out of the crate!

Our dog is 14.5 y/o and a tall breed, so basically a 95 y/o grandma. She's behaving like a puppy again. She has trouble sleepinh in the warmer weather as well, we just bought a fan just for her and it seems to help. That being said I don't think I would have done the same with a puppy, but giving the choice to chose a comfy / cool place might do the trick as you suggested?
Also, cat brought in another mouse. I'm in disbelief.

Wow moggie is on the rampage! She must be really wanting to show you she loves you!
I read about fans working for some dogs. In the end i let her out, gave her some ice cubes in her water whuch she LOVES, afterwhich she settled on the sofa, so i figured if she's happy on the sofa then she does want something soft so covered her bed with a big linen tablecloth (never actually used as a tablecloth!!) in crate which is cooler than blankets, and that did the trick.
It looks like its going to heat up even more next week though so might need to seriously consider letting her have the kitchen to herself for the night.
And a fan!

I hope your 14 yo pooch manages ok in the heat. It does seem like they need more care again in old age. A lot like us!

go for it, take a crate and have a brilliant time. Our labs were all crate trained until they became too large and then by then we’d sorted the chewing.

Yamyam13 · 12/06/2022 07:17

Also can report that we went to the seaside yesterday and it was a great success.
Pup was completely mental with excitement for the first hour, esp as it was prime dog walking time so there were new dogs everywhere which she LOVES so it was a bit intense as she likes to say hello to EVERYONE and doesnt always take a hint from dogs that dont want to say hello and play, but once she'd settled and got itnout her system she loved it & had her first ever proper swim. In the afternoon she even managed a good snooze in the shade.
She was great on the journey too... ooops Should I even say that?? Setting myself up again!! Next time no doubt she'll be a nightmare now!

It is so much easier in the heat if you have a dog that loves to swim :) fortunately our senior pup also loves to swim, I just had to buy her a lifejacket, better safe than sorry. Glad you had a great day at the sea!

Aquafizzle · 15/06/2022 00:12

I've taken my pup on journeys by train since she was 4 months to acclimatise her and now (9 months) she is very portable. In a car I sit in the back with her as she's not so relaxed in the front.

My advice would be to take pup to the park for a long walk to tire them out first. Have a tube of liver paste or other high value treat to distract them if they get restless.

Finally, in this weather make sure the aircon is blowing in the car! Have water available at all times.
