Best treats for dogs?

Always a bit wary about buying dog treats as the ingredients often seem a bit awful crude ash and really low levels of meat. I try and freeze the scraggy bits of chicken or lamb in little tubs and defrost overnight or a couple of hard boiled eggs are popular.

That said I grabbed a bag of treats in TOFS as they were more than 80% duck/cod. She was very keen. I did think they were a bit salty though at 0.5%. Does anyone have recommendations for high meat content treats, medium sized lab about 20Kg. Comes from working stock so likes lots of exercise.

Crude ash is not an ingredient - it's a way of measuring the amount of mineral in a product. i.e., if I burned it, what would be left? So don't worry about crude ash content. I understand why you'd be wary of low meat content. Ditto, don't take the crude protein value as being the meat content (if you are).

Lots of good treat options these days. Someone like Fresco do bags of traing bones that are 100% dried meat - all sorts of flavours. They also do bigger treats such as dried fillets or long sticks you can break up into pieces.

On the cheaper end, Pet Munchies do tiny squares that are meat + glycerin (this is what keeps them moist). These are great for training as they are tiny, tasty and easily eaten.

Millies Wolfheart so more of a biscuit type training treat that is meat + potato. Plus they do chewy heart shaped treats that are a big bigger and equally good.

Oh, and Fish4Dogs do a lot of fish based treats - if that's what your dog likes. Including dried fish skin, for example. That's very healthy for them.

Treats2Sit4 do a lot of treats that are basically dehydrated meat and offal

DDog is a fan

How high-value do you need it to be?

I'm a dog walker and use Tesco cocktail sausages, lol. Cheap, they don't smell and all the dogs absolutely love them.

What’s the treat for?
we just use our dogs food for training and then chicken or cocktail sausages if we need something higher value

sarge89 · 08/06/2022 17:35

Sprats and similar are really good!

AntlerRose · 08/06/2022 17:46

My dog likes carrot, broccoli and a lick of primula cheese out the tube. (i know, not meat)

On meat he likes
JR pure chicken pate sausage- we cut it into little bits and stick in the freezer as it goes off when opened. We grab a few when we head out. They defrost quickly.

serenghetti2011 · 08/06/2022 17:59

whatever you feed him with. I take a proportion out of his daily food allowance for calm - I mark (nice then I place a piece of food down for him) I save high value - liver paste or beef as he has a poultry intolerance
I don’t give sausage or anything like that or anything bought he gets a tripe stick sometimes

I use these for my dog as treats when out and about. They are soft enough to split into smaller bits to make them go further www.millieswolfheart.co.uk/fishy-hearties

They do a turkey one too but not tried that www.millieswolfheart.co.uk/turkey-hearties

I have a six month old Lab whom I am doing a lot of training with. Buying packs of training treats was far too expensive, so rather than bore him with his usual food, I bought a small bag of premium food of a different variety and I am using that plus tiny cubes of cheap Cheddar. Love the suggestion of cheap cocktail sausages!

My dog adores the turkey ones.

Dried sprats here. I've just had my order come through the post. They vary with the season and they're huge at the minute!

She loves a bit of salmon skin so that's useful.

A training treat really. We've just started letting her be off lead at the loch and forest walks when there are others around. Generally she's good and focused on me. Loves to say hello to other dogs and whilst most are keen I need to be able to stop her approaching dogs on leash. For a bit of chicken or egg she will sit nicely and ignore any dogs passing by. Looking for the same result in a more convenient snack.

Don't think she's a massive fan of cocktail sausages (spoilt pooch.)
