Fussy dog won't eat anything

We have 2 small dogs, both under 6kgs. One girl who is 6 and a boy who is nearly 11.

The boy will eat just about anything but the girl has just stopped eating dog food. We've tried just about most of the reasonably priced foods you can get in the supermarket and pets at home.

She will eat the cheapest of the cheap i.e. Lidl own brand JUST but then she started peeing in the house several times a day, which stopped as soon as we stopped that food.

It has to be wet food, she wouldn't touch a dry biscuit and I can't leave food down all day as the cats then eat it.

She will, however, gladly shove the cats out of their bowls and wolf that down if I don't supervise meal times.

We had some success with raw, until she went off that after a couple of weeks, then some success with Nature's Menu, until she went off that as well.

Has anyone had any success with some miracle food with a particularly fussy dog?

They did always used to get meat scraps, lick the gravy from the plate etc but I have put a stop to that since the fussiness started.

All she has had to eat today is her bedtime treat of horrid bakers bacon twist things and I'm going to set her free if she doesn't stop turning her nose up at the unacceptable amount of money I'm spending on different foods at the moment.

Have you had her teeth checked?
wet food means they need to pee more, if that’s what she prefers I’d feed that but give plenty of pee breaks and feed the last meal around 5 so plenty of time for final pee before bed

My dog has decided that he'll only eat of a plate, not a bowl. Do the cats have their food in the same sort of bowl as the dogs?

is nature’s menu the raw frozen chunks? Our dog has that - various flavours. Way the most popular food we’ve tried for her (have many other rejected types lying about!)

Get her teeth checked

Random question but does she scratch, sneeze or vomit more than dogs usually do? WE thought our pup was fussy but it turns out she's intolerant to EVERYTHING so her refusal to eat her old food was down to her instinctively trying to avoid foods that upset her. We've found ONE flavour of ONE brand (Lily's kitchen) which she does well on. A long process of elimination though.

have you tried Chappie? It often sorts problems like this.

I think you need a visit to the vet, my small dog started peeing in the house suddenly and also went off her food, it turns out these were symptoms of kidney disease, of course it may be your dog is fine but I think you really need to flag this with the vet. My dog is now on medication and a renal food diet and although she is still fussy she does eat now.

Is there any reason why she can’t have scraps? I am wondering about letting my tiny fussy dog just eat the off cuts of meat and veg that we don’t eat. There’s a cost of living crisis after all!

PimmsTime · 06/06/2022 23:14

I think if you feed scraps Hardtobelieve123 they need to be quite balanced eg need to contain a certain amount of offal, veg etc. As otherwise there’s a risk of deficiencies. There might be info online somewhere as I remember Judith someone or other very clear on teaching what is ok!
we do supplement our fussy DDog with eggs, sardines, cooked veg and leftover meat scraps without the fat . She isn’t much help to OP though as does like Orijen which is a dry kibble.
