Is there anything ok about this?

Hi, this is about someone I work with. The person is an intelligent, nice person. Everyone seems to accept this is what they do. I know it is wrong but how wrong is it?

Person works long hours. 8am until 10pm. Dog is kept in car in work car park. Person goes out at break times for quite short periods of time to let dog on grass and to eat. Then dog goes back in car. It looks like a youngish Alsation type of dog. Eats raw food. It seems happy and settled but has started chewing bits of the car. Person moving away soon to a job where they drive around so dog will still be in car but not alone as much.

This is cruel isn't it?

Of course it’s cruel.
Apart from the poor dog being left for so long, is the car air conditioned?
Might be worth ringing police and RSPCA.

PinkGreen · 06/06/2022 07:55

I want to but its difficult when it is someone I am friendly with and no one else is bothering about it. Can air-conditioning be on if the car is switched off? Windows opened a wee bit. I think I will speak to my boss about it. It feels wrong to say nothing. But difficult to speak up. Dog looks happy and well cared for.

Isn't he worried about the risk of it being stolen as well?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/06/2022 12:14

He / She ( I see now you didn't specify )

pigsDOfly · 06/06/2022 13:38

Of course it's cruel.

What's going to happen when the weather warms up.

Dogs left in cars in warm weather can, and do, die. It doesn't take long and it's a horrible death.

No dog confined to the small space of a car for hours on end is happy. This is young large breed dog and needs exercising regularly.

Dogs have a tendency to accept their lot but the chewing is a strong indication that the dog isn't happy and settled. And the owner isn't a nice person.

PinkGreen · 06/06/2022 14:14

Yes I think I agree that the owner is not a nice person because they do this to the dog.

I don't think there is a risk of dog being stolen as it is in a secluded car park of a business. But it is a good point that I had not thought of.

Weather is quite hot here. I do feel worried for the dog.

Thank you for replies.

I would call and report to the police if the dog is left in the car on a warm day. It's really dangerous and just leaving a window open isn't enough.

I know that Tesla cars have a dog setting where the aircon can be left on but the screen display will be on and will tell you this.

That's the only car with this feature as far as I'm aware.

OldWivesTale · 06/06/2022 14:30

Report to the RSPCA; they won't have to know it's you.

PinkGreen · 06/06/2022 15:25

Thank you very much everyone. It is not the type of car mentioned. I will see if I can get the car registration number as that may help and I will try to feel confident to report it.

I'd go with the police if the dog is locked in a hot car. They'll be able to respond much more quickly.

XelaM · 06/06/2022 18:53

Unless it's in a Tesla or a caravan, this is incredibly cruel!! Why don't they hire a dog walker like all working people?!

PinkGreen · 06/06/2022 19:33

It is because the dog seems happy it wouldn't feel right to phone the police. I don't know why it is so difficult a situation for me. The dog seems to be ok.

I think the dog has been destructive at home that's why the person chooses the car.

But cars get very, very hot in the summer. It's very dangerous for the dog and police would definitely intervene to save the dog from a hot car.

XelaM · 06/06/2022 21:05

And the woman should pay for a dog sitter l like the rest of us.

XelaM · 06/06/2022 21:08

I can barely breathe when I get into a stationary car that has been parked in the sun for awhile until air-con is switched on. It's inhumane and the dog could die.

GillyGumbo · 06/06/2022 21:17

The car won't be hot all year round, only on sunny or humid days in spring/summer months, but the point is really that this is no quality of life for a dog (or any living, breathing sentient creature).

The dog would be better off confined to one or two dog-proofed rooms at home, with a couple of visits a day from a dog walker, or going to doggy daycare. Inevitably the owner does not do this due to cost, so the only solution is to bring the dog to work in the car.

Doubt the RSPCA will do much as the dog has food, water and shelter, at a push they might "give advice" I suppose.

GillyGumbo · 06/06/2022 21:19

But obviously on warmer days the car solution isn't going to work!

XelaM · 06/06/2022 21:20

Sorry to link to a trashy paper like the sun, but the police do care if dogs are in a hot car: www.thesun.co.uk/news/15260359/cops-rescue-beagle-roasting-hot-car-brighton/amp/

The dog could die. It really is as simple as that.

PinkGreen · 07/06/2022 05:37

Thank you all of you. I will go see if the dog is there today. I am not working but will go see.

It's not there today. Will do something next time I see it. Thanks again for all your replies.

would you want to be in a car for 14 hours?? My dog is more than happy in the car for an hour or so on a cool day but no more and even when it gets to about 15 degrees outside, it’s too hot inside the car without air conditioning on.

Ihatethenewlook · 07/06/2022 14:15

I’m assuming you see it when it’s finally let out for the few minutes a day, of course it looks happy then. I absolutely guarantee that it’s not happy being locked in the car for that long on an almost daily basis. The poor things a prisoner, not a pet 🙁

Kanta · 07/06/2022 14:17

This is cruel! There is no two ways about it. Someone needs to call them out on it or report it. Humans didn't enjoy Covid being stuck at home. How can the animal enjoy being stuck in a closed car?!

PinkGreen · 07/06/2022 14:48

I know. I agree with everything. Just had to check what others think because no one else in rl is doing anything about it. Just trying to figure out why
