Alternative for appoquel

Hi, my yorkie cross is on long term appoquel.
He's always been super itchy and licks/bites his paws a lot and scratches his ears then gets infections a lot. We did an allergy test and it came back with 22 allergies. The vet put him on long term appoquel. The first year he was on it we were able to stop it from Dec then had to start back up again april so it's also seasonal allergies he has too. However last year once we stopped his symptoms came back immediately so he's been on the appoquel every day now. However, 1) he has started getting itchy bouts, even whilst on them so I don't know if they're fully working anymore anyway. And 2) they are so expensive!! And the vet gives me a prescription which I then buy them on pet drugs online. But still expensive just wandered if anyone knows of an effective and cheaper alternative please?

There are other options monthly injections are one it would be worth chatting with your vet.

I think you should ask why they aren’t working. They should do. You could spend a fortune on salmon oils, weird green algae and the like but it’s not likely to be cheaper or to work! Maybe he needs a slightly bigger dose but your vet can tell
you that. I use to claim mine through pet insurance.

one vet suggested cytopoint injections to me as an alternative, a second vet reckoned there wasn’t much difference between them? Have also given our itchy boy a daily (human, on vets advice) piriton before moving on to Apoquel, which we’ve found good. Usually order with vets prescription from VioVet and if you do it through TopCashback you can get a bit more money off too 👍

Look in to quercetin. It works great for my dogs.

My dog was put on Apoquel but it made her aggressive towards my other dogs & obsessively chew her feet so we swapped to cytopoint injections, they are supposed to be monthly but it's usually 3-4 months before she starts itching again

My girl was on Apoquel and it worked brilliantly.. until the vet lowered the dose to a maintenance dose..then she itched again.
We decided to give the cytopoint injections a go..again not cheap, but she literally stopped scratching within a couple of hours. We are now at the end of the month and she's having the odd scratch again so I think she will need them monthly in the summer.
The bonus is I'm not trying to hide pills in cheese either!
