Changing food

BaconAndAvocado · 04/06/2022 22:20

We recently altered our 10 mo Lab’s food.
He was originally on Natural Food Company dry food supplemented with Chappie wet.
We’ve phased in Chappie dry food to replace the NFC and are continuing with the Chappie wet.
His poos have been quite loose....is this because his system is getting used to the new food?

How slowly did you change it over?

SarahSissions · 05/06/2022 09:46

maybe too much (in terms of volume) different foods have different nutritional values so some foods you need to feed less of. I probably try cutting the intake a bit and see if that forms them up.

Poos are now firming up!

Will see how things progress........having just bought 2 massive bags of Chappie dry 🙄

What's the reason for switching?

Chappie has it's place and I know it's great for some dogs, but it's not amazing nutritionally and loose poos are often the result of food not agreeing with them and not being digested proprerly.

Chappie is cheap, unfortunately our dog wouldn't entertain it so it's back to lilys kitchen 🙈

Soubriquet · 05/06/2022 19:17

You probably did change too quick

Chappie is not the best food to feed them really but saying that, it’s better than nothing if it comes down to finances.

Soubriquet · 05/06/2022 19:18

@userxx

Try barking heads. Not as pricey as Lilly’s kitchen but still good food.

Finances!

It's not always cheaper to feed a cheaper food - dogs generally need much more of the cheaper brands to feel full and to get the nutrients they need.

If finances are an issue, what about a brand like Burns or Skinners for working dogs?

TranquilBlue · 05/06/2022 19:25

If finances are tight, I agree with the pp who suggested Skinners. My last two dogs were on Skinners Salmon and did really well on it. If you order it via regular subscription on Amazon you can get it cheaper than other sites.

Thanks all.
I will take a look at the brands you’ve suggested 👍🏻

Today has been a lot better.
