Best natural chews for toy breed puppies

Our new pup will be coming home in a couple of weeks. I have pretty much everything in place: crash tested car crate/bag, house/tag collar plus normal collar and lead, lots of toys, safe place (playpen/run and bed etc) downstairs and similar alongside my bed upstairs, dog proofing in the house and garden done etc, but want to make sure I have a good stock of chews and things for teething to rotate, especially during the bitey stage!

I am used to large breed dogs and things like ostrich bones are obviously going to be too big. I thought I’d buy a small coffee wood stick and some yakkers. I’ve had split antlers before, but am not sure about them now, as I’ve heard quite a few stories of tooth injuries from antlers since I last had a puppy.

Been looking at the JR Pet Products site and was thinking perhaps the ostrich tendons and braids.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for a teeny pup?

My small (but not toy) breed likes plaited tendon (any species), twisted dried bladder (doesn't last long), ears (the thinner ones) and loves a pizzle as a big treat (they're a bit too rich to give frequently).

Mine loves yak chews but his absolute favourites are pizzle sticks

Thank you. I will definitely get some yakkers and braided tendons. I really hate pizzles though, can’t stand the smell. I know dogs love them and I have given them in the past but they turn my stomach.

I raw fed for years without any problems, despite being a vegetarian for 40 years, but there’s something about pizzles that I really can’t cope with (and it’s not just the thought of what they actually are).

When my Pekingese came to live with me at age 11 months - so technically still a puppy - I found that a puppy size Kong toy stuffed with bits of dry dogfood & broken dog biscuits helped keep him occupied and gave him something to chew on other that the legs of my computer chair. At almost 9 years now he's long since grown out of the chewing habit, thank goodness!

My Pomeranian - weighing in at barely 3 kilo's and smaller than my tabby cat - has never been a chewer because she doesn't have any teeth at all, thanls to neglect by her previous owner (she's a rescue dog who came to me at age 7 years and is now turned 14).

@cobden28 thank you. I am a big fan on kongs. I’ve already bought the tiny/first-sized one and some lickimats.

These things called Yaks are fantastic, keeps my puppy happy for hours

Clymene · 04/06/2022 09:58

Yaks are great if pizzle makes you heave. Lots of dogs loved dried sprats too.

HeArInGhandsgirl11 · 04/06/2022 09:59

Never seen pizzle.. will have a look

TranquilBlue · 04/06/2022 14:47

Thank you. I hate sprats too - it’s the way they look at me 😂- but I do buy those.

I’ve ordered some yak chews and braided tendons, plus a small coffee-wood stick.
