Hotel holidays with dogs.. is it possible?

Hello. We have an older girl we will always take on holiday with us, and have always rented small cottages etc and have spent our time walking, exploring and she's loved it.

She's not as able anymore, and cottages are so expensive (just 2 of us and her) and we could stay in some lovely hotels for less. However we have never taken a dog to a hotel so looking for some tips/ advice please.

For example if dogs aren't allowed in the dining room do you avoid? Are there actually places that do allow it (if so, where?!). Leaving her alone in a room isn't a possibility.

Any advice, suggestions would be much appreciated.

We’ve taken ours to a dog friendly hotel for a long weekend. I do prefer cottages but that’s just a general thing, dog or not.
It worked quite well. They had two separate dining rooms. One for people with dogs and one no dogs allowed.

We stayed at The Balmer Lawn o tbe New Forest and it was very dog friendly. It was summer and we chose to eat outside and he was very welcome

We have taken ours to several hotels without any problems. We either just didn't use the hotel dining room, ate out or in the room or took turns in the dining room. Pet-friendly hotels will have lots of other dogs staying as well.

The main concern for me with hotels is how easily will any barking travel between rooms, and will the dog be able to get to the toilet in time if you don't have a room with outside space/a garden.

Most dog-friendly hotels have separate dining rooms for dogs, or allow you to eat in the bar area. They also don't allow you to leave the dogs unattended in the rooms.

Depending on where you're travelling, some hotels have ground-floor, dog-friendly rooms with enclosed gardens which might be a good option, or maybe a dog-friendly B&B?

Booking.com will find pet-friendly hotels for you. Ibis for example is always pet-friendly but loads of hotels are.

The Fish Hotel has specific dog friendly rooms which are easy to get outside from, and you can eat in the bar but not the restaurant. We've stayed in a hotel with the dogs, and it wasn't great as we were on the third floor and our dogs were sooo excited that we were in one room as a family that they bed surfed all night, but it worked out.

The dog friendly Ibis we stayed in was really echoey. Our pup barked a few times out of excitement when we first got to the room, at around 7pm. The person in the room above complained immediately to reception. Reception told me not to worry and apparently the gentleman had been busy complaining about everything but did put us on edge a bit. Pup never made another sound all night.

We were third floor with a lift to negotiate, not an issue for us but might be an issue for some dogs.

All but a very few Travelodge and Britannia hotels allow dogs .
Depending on the set up of each hotel i have found that they allow dogs in the bar ( where you can eat ) but not in the restaurants.
I think all ( rightly) say you can not leave your pooch in the room alone in the room.

Depending on where you plan on staying I have found that going out for a meal with your dog is getting better .
Scarborough and Southport have loads of pub friendly pubs the do good food.

Stayed several times, they will reserve table in bar area - which is lovely, more bar lounge, we prefer sitting there, for breakfast & evening meal. We've not struggled finding anywhere else to eat, it's a dog friendly in the area.

Quite a lot of good pubs with B&B allow dogs. I stayed in a lovely one in Yorkshire that had not only lovely walks from the front door but an exercise paddock at the back.

We have used Pets Pyjamas and they have been great. A good selection of dog friendly hotels and pubs with plenty of reviews to let you know about garden rooms or rooms with access etc..

We stayed at hotel duvin in York. You couldn't take dogs into the dinning room but there were plenty of restaurants/pubs in the area that did allow dogs so we visited them.

We’ve stayed at an Inn that had an annexe for guests and the ground floor rooms were for dogs. We had dinner in the bar area with dog and breakfast was supposed to be in the same area, but as we went to breakfast early they let us have breakfast in the dining room. We’ve also stayed at the Balmer Lawn in the New Forest before we got our dog, the room above us had 2 small dogs, which ran around a lot, but didn’t bark. Unfortunately I don’t think it would be any good for us as it’s quite a busy hotel and our dog would bark if he heard noises from outside the room. I personally would try and find somewhere small.

We have stayed at Beck Hall in Malham a couple of times. It’s very dog friendly and dogs are allowed everywhere. The restaurant is lovely as is the village pub the Lister Arms (also great food). It’s a good base for walks (Malham cove, Janets foss, Gordale scar).

@CMOTDibbler I was going to mention the fish. We have taken our dog to stay in the treehouse there but unfortunately dogs aren’t allowed on the huts. It’s very dog friendly with an agility course and outside bath.
you can also take dogs to the gilpin in the Lake District.
