More than or Tesco insurance?

Has anyone claimed from either of these companies who can tell me if they were easy to deal with or tried to wiggle out of the claim for silly reasons (Unvaccinated dogs and that type of thing?!)

Petplan won’t insure her for more than 12 months due to age (5 🤔)
Bought by many want a stupid amount of money with a 20% co-payment for a pathetic £3k of cover.
Kennel club and Agria are even more expensive!
Animal friends I don’t want to go near after a bad experience last time.

I obviously don’t want my dogs to go without but with the current situation I can’t afford to be stumping up almost £200 per month for insurance policies.

I have no savings but I do have a credit card for emergencies. I’m half tempted to just use that!

Asda/more than and Tesco have reasonably priced insurances but are they worth the paper they are written on if you have to claim?

I stopped paying insurance and put the money into an account for them instead, plus I had a CC if needed. It worked out well for me as mine doesn’t have any health problems.

BiteyShark · 25/05/2022 06:30

I have petplan so can't comment on the other companies.

But I think what seems to cause the problems with claiming is not understanding all the T&Cs. You need to crawl through them with a fine comb and double check everything. For example mine covers and has paid out for dental scale when vet recommended it. However, in my insurance there is fine print that says dental is covered as long as a vet has examined their teeth previously within the last 12 months before work was needed. That is fine as mine goes for a vet check every 6 months but some people will be caught out with that if they didn't actually read the policy document from start to finish.

Also be prepared that 'any thing' you have seen your vet about irrespective of claims or diagnosis can be deemed a pre existing condition for a new policy.

OpposableThumbs2 · 25/05/2022 06:34

Tesco have paid out several times for my cat. The vet has always filled in the form. Never had any issues.

Saucery · 25/05/2022 06:35

We had Tesco insurance for our previous dog and they were fine with claims. She had expensive investigations for a leg sprain and a temporary neurological issue but they paid out promptly. There was a minor mix up when the vet asked us to pay up front for some treatment (around £800) AND the claim went in so Tesco paid up as well, but the vet refunded us for that.
They were also sensitive and efficient when she died, which helped a lot.

I’ve had MoreThan for car insurance and they were fine too, with the one claim I made.

Saucery · 25/05/2022 06:38

Tesco premiums went up from £25 to just under £150 by the time our dog was 10, but just the 2 investigations she had over those 10 years came to over £10,000 so I wouldn’t be without insurance.

Ithinkimightbebroken · 25/05/2022 06:52

Thanks everyone!

For example the more than quote was £20 per month for 6k cover.
Tesco £17 for 5k.
Bought by many want £62 for 3k with a 20% co payment. An increase of £18 per month from last year.

The dog is only 5 and she’s never been to the vet for anything but I don’t dare not have it as we have 0 savings to fall back on!

We're with Tesco. I pay £37 per month for our 4yo beagle and that's on a 15k lifetime policy that includes dental.

My cats are also insured with Tesco on the same policy.

I would say 5k per year for a dog is nowhere near enough coverage.

Ithinkimightbebroken · 25/05/2022 06:59

@coffeecupsandfairylights I get a fairly large veterinary discount due to my work so I’m not too worried as long as we have 5k I think that’s enough for most things and anything over that I’ll just get discounted.

Due to my dogs being breeds being deemed ‘risky’ by insurances the premiums for any more than the basic levels (3-5k) are just astronomical- over £100 per month in most cases which I just can’t afford.

Did Tesco put your premium up a huge amount every year or has it stayed roughly the same?

coffeecupsandfairylights · 25/05/2022 07:02

It's gone up £10 per month in the last four years - started at £27 when we got him at twelve weeks ☺️

It's good you'll get a discount but I just know from reading threads on here that 5k can be eaten up in a flash.

Ithinkimightbebroken · 25/05/2022 07:25

Thankyou @coffeecupsandfairylights !

I definatley think it’s fair to say £5k can be eaten up very easily. I wish I could afford more cover but as soon as this particular dog reached 5 it meant any of the more expensive policies are just unaffordable.

My oldest dog only has 3k but he is 13 years old and I doubt I would do much in the way of treatment. His policy is still £60 per month!

Youngest dog has 6.5k for £60 per month…dread to think what that will reach!

We've just got our renewal through for our 5 year old large cross breed (mongrel) and it's gone up from £16pm to £27pm. She is in better shape now than when we adopted her a year ago and hasn't seen a vet other than for routine stuff.

I have shopped around and come across Napo. They seem to be relatively new with good reviews. I'm tempted but need to do more digging about.

Srtonger · 25/05/2022 16:36

I claimed from Tesco recently and they were very good and paid very quickly .

Floralnomad · 25/05/2022 16:38

Have you looked at Direct Line , we have our dog insured on their more expensive policy and have had no problems on the occasions we’ve claimed .

Ithinkimightbebroken · 25/05/2022 18:11

Just found Napo @Idratherhaveacuppa They are cheap at £20 month for £4K cover but I’m not sure if I dare risk it!

Ill have a look at direct line thanks!

Our one had a bit of an accident eating a chicken skewer and the skewer got stuck, he had to be opened up in the end and was in intensive care for 8 days but got through it, we were with Tesco and they were good and paid up straight to the vet. Very difficult to change though once you have had an incident but we're happy with them.

MrOllivander · 27/05/2022 11:13

I had cat insurance with Tesco, they paid directly to my vet with no issues at all and it was a 3k claim
