Old dog - time? Not time?

Just looking for some thoughts really.

I have a lovely 12.5 year old Sprocker. His hips are gone but he's on medication for them which seems to keep the worst at bay. He seems quite deaf (or he's just really upped his ignoring me game) and the vet confirmed his eyes are developing cataracts. We can't let him off the lead any more as he has lost all sense and becomes disoriented in seconds (presumably because of his sight and hearing). The last straw for this was the other day when I let him off and he sprinted away from me in a straight line then, rather than turn and come back as you'd expect, threw himself off an 8 foot wall to get to the next nearest humans.

He is also pooing in the house a lot. Whilst preferable to weeing, I have a toddler and it's not ideal. Our morning routine of coming downstairs and her sitting on the step while mummy clears up the dog poo is just... not great? It makes me so sad to come down and see him lying in his poo. It's at least once or twice a day no matter how often I take him out.

In a way, I wish something was more seriously wrong with him and this decision could be taken from me? But equally all the things he loved in life are gone for him. He used to swim against the Thames tide for hours. He hiked for 12 hours through the Peaks, slept for two and was ready to go again. He was never meant to be a round the block and sleep for the rest of the day dog, he doesn't like it, he wants to run... He can't be happy about lying in his poo, he hasn't had an accident since he was tiny.

It all just makes me so sad. Poor old thing. I thought I'd know when it was time but now I'm not so sure.

Hey OP. So sorry you’re at this point. Can’t remember if it was on here or somewhere else where I saw someone say they gave their dog the best day ever, and made sure they ate chocolate as no dog should pass having not tasted it.

I thought the sentiment was lovely.

ThisisMax · 25/05/2022 22:47

Dont give your dog chocolate it makes them very sick.

I just wanted to pop back and thank you all again for your gentle advice and counsel.

We said goodbye to our old boy on Saturday. Of course, on Thursday and Friday, he was bouncing about like a two year old without a care in the world.

He was a lovely friend, and I hope I stop looking at the back door to bring him inside soon. Here's a picture of him in younger, bouncier times - he was very handsome, very silly and I loved him very much ❤️

What a beautiful boy. So sorry for your loss - I know how heartbreaking it is - but he's at peace now. He was obviously a very dearly loved member of your family and had a wonderful life with you. The happy memories will outnumber the tears one day Flowers

MyDogTails · 07/06/2022 13:01

What a beautiful doggie. He lived a wonderful life and was a friend to you all, as you were to him.
But it doesn't make it easier right now. Flowers

What a beautiful boy! I’ve just posted on another thread about taking photos so you can look back and be reassured.
We’ve just rehomed an old boy after our 15yo died and it’s been a lovely silver lining.

ThisisMax · 07/06/2022 14:23

What a beautiful boy, sunny days and not a care in the world. He was lucky to have you OP - you were a good owner and even with the loss I hope you remember happy days.

MNSureIsBreachin · 07/06/2022 15:18

Oh op I’m so sorry for your loss he looks lovely. You absolutely did the right thing - waiting till he was literally on his last legs or worse still, couldn’t get up would be awful. He had the best life and a calm end with his loving owners and what dog could ask for any better than that.

WeAreTheHeroes · 07/06/2022 15:55

What a lovely boy - I'm so sorry for your loss OP, it was a kindness for him though x

bellalou1234 · 07/06/2022 16:53

I'm so sorry. He was a beautiful boy. Xx

Yiayoula · 07/06/2022 17:09

Sorry to read your update, but you truly did the kindest ( and hardest ) thing.

Such a beautiful photograph , too - the happiness and zest for life just shines out of him. 💐

caringcarer · 07/06/2022 17:13

You loved him enough to let him go before his quality of life deteriorated further. He looks a lovely bouncy boy. Remember how he enriched your lives.

What a beautiful good boy. You truly were his best friend and you and DH took the right decision for him at the right time. We gave up one dear dog at nearly 17 years of age and our daughter's beautiful golden retriever is 12 and showing signs of back legs going so we know how hard it is. Her children have no memory of their dog not being there so we must begin preparing them for the inevitable. Never easy but the most important part of being our dear pet's best friend 💐
