Bloody ticks

Sat here and already picked five off him that I could see.

I counted six yesterday.

Hate the things 🤬

I must make the dog paranoid as I sit staring at him looking for anything moving.

We got one off our dhusky. No idea how the hell it got through her hair..
Didn't know they can transfer as one of the other ones must have brought it in. She is post op and been housebound for a fortnight..

BiteyShark · 22/05/2022 09:56

They are awful. We are now up to seven since posting.

They get squashed and in the bin.

@BiteyShark how do you spot them or know they have a tick and where do they come from?

Floralnomad · 22/05/2022 11:00

Is he getting them in your garden if not I’d be walking somewhere different . My dog is 12 and we’ve never had a tick are some dogs more attractive .

We walk in the forest and he gets covered in them as he runs through all the undergrowth where deers and other animals have been. They get picked up as he brushes against the foliage.

We have him clipped short which makes it slightly easier to see. After a walk they all seem to start moving along his fur usually towards his face (they love attaching to his eye lids 🤬) so if I watch him intently I can often see a black spec moving slowly and pick them off.

For any we miss, and we do miss some, that attach to him the monthly tick/flea/work treatment kills them usually within 24 hours.

Unfortunately unless I walk only on the road then it's forest walks where I am. Which is beautiful but tick hell.

Just Googled some home brewed sprays recipes!! Looks worth a try op!!

poddlefan · 22/05/2022 12:51

I’ve had dogs for 40+ years with all types of fur and I live rurally up until last year Ive only ever found 2. Last year my miniature poodle got 3 this year I’m picking 5+ off a day. My dog groomer said all dogs are coming in with loads of them and doggy friends/neighbours are saying the same. The dog groomer says it’s because we didn’t get a very long cold winter we normally do here we only got about 6 days of snow. Don’t know if that’s correct. .

@BiteyShark I walk in woods and forest too and she is always in the undergrowth but so far haven't spotted any... my dog is black and quite fluffy so maybe I just can't see them?! Would it be obvious if she had ticks? She has monthly advocate treatment so maybe that helps?

You might not notice unless you run your fingers through the fur. They are tiny but get a bit bigger when attached and fill up with blood.

Do you live in a high tick area?

Our black lab has had a couple this year. We've found them attached when we've been stroking her. Both acquired abroad I think, although we're in wooded areas a lot here ticks don't appear to be a big issue.

I'd found a tick crawling on me when in Denmark so I'd given pup a quick check, especially in the more hairless areas, i.e. ears, armpits, belly etc. but she ended up with one on her back and one on her neck/chest which we didn't find until later. She has advocate monthly too.

Trulyweird1 · 23/05/2022 13:49

There are a lot here in the Highlands this year. Partly weather, but vet suggested it’s also down to increased wildlife , especially deer, who were not culled during pandemic.
Despite Nexguard monthly, both my labs pick them up, and this year for the first time DH & I have had them too.
It doesn’t matter whether we are on the hills or in the local park, buggers are everywhere.

Ivedonethisthreetimealready · 23/05/2022 15:29

Aria20 Advocate will not do anything to help prevent ticks.

We can get 5 or 6 of our dogs on one walk. I run a lint roller over them when we finish the walk and the ticks stick to that and stops some of them from attaching.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 23/05/2022 18:11

I'm in Cumbria and they're everywhere this year - I picked three off a collie this morning after a walk in the woods!

aibuuname · 23/05/2022 18:15

Can you get bravecto or nexguard in the UK. I'm in a country with huge tick fever problems and very high levels of ticks and my dogs haven't had a single one on them since I started giving them nexguard

BiteyShark · 23/05/2022 18:20

We use nexgard spectra which kills them within about 24 hours after they have attached.

HowIsItMarchAlready · 23/05/2022 18:24

Seresto. Stops ticks from latching on in the first place.

poddlefan · 23/05/2022 18:26

I use bravecto and was told it doesn’t stop them attaching but kills them within about 24 hours.
We have a lot of woodland here even walking to the beach along the edge of the shore it’s woodland and also deer everywhere I was worried about Lyme disease but my vet said the incidence is very low in my area.

MagnoliaTaint · 24/05/2022 14:15

Tick sticks are fab.

The dog gets dozens every time she goes out because she sticks her face into everything. They do die, because of her flea/worm/tick treatment - bravecto, but sometimes I want them out anyway.

Another vote for a Seresto collar. My spaniel was like your dog the first spring but since then, eight years now, he has had only one or two in total. I put it on mid-March and take it off mid-November. Worth the money. My other dog is on a care plan and is on Symparico, and I haven't found ticks on him either.

Wolfiefan · 24/05/2022 16:09

I use Nexgard. Only ever found one dead tick on them. It also helps that they are tall beasts. 😆

fionamadcat · 25/05/2022 20:04

I like the idea of a lint roller, I pulled 10 at least that hadn’t attached off my mum’s English setter the other week, she seems to attract them (someone suggested because she is mainly white?). My Gordon setter doesn’t seem to attract them as much.
