Puppy’s first night

We picked our gorgeous puppy up this morning.

We’d like to think he’s already settled in well but what do you wish you’d be warned/told about for the first night at home?

They can squeeze through smaller gaps than you realise!

Anewuser · 21/05/2022 17:35

@Basilbrushgotfat yes! I’d also forgotten how tiny they are. Thought we’d puppy proofed the garden but still finding myself following him around - just in case.

That he is actually a baby spending the first night away from his Mother and siblings and will cry...

And cry...

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/05/2022 17:40

Also try not to say out loud any of the rules you intend on keeping because you'll probably break most of them pretty quickly...
sleeping in our bed and getting to lick the occasional plate for starters

ATadConfused · 21/05/2022 17:40

That some puppies are NO bother At All & just sleep. None of this sleeping on the sofa, paw holding, all night required. Taken out for a wee at 2am, straight back to bed & sleep.

Friends lab pup.

he's such a good dog.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 21/05/2022 17:40

They can reach things you can't imagine they can reach!

100problems · 21/05/2022 17:52

Ours slept in his bed under DS's bed on the first night and ever since. Puppy sheets down for first few weeks. They go to bed at 10:30, wake at 6:30 and you'd never know the puppy was there.

Anewuser · 21/05/2022 18:31

@ATadConfused mine’s a lab so that’s what I’m hoping for. So far, he’s had a few dog naps then straight outside for a wee when he’s woken - so fingers crossed.

@100problems I would love for him to sleep under DS bed but he’s mostly nocturnal now. Although, that may work!

@mumsiedarlingrevolta I remember that with my old girls, no sleeping on beds, jumping on sofa, feeding from our plates, all that got ignored.

@coffeecupsandfairylights Especially at the rate he’ll grow.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/05/2022 18:36

@Anewuser we wouldn't have it any other way would we??

Also that they will steal your heart and you are putty in their paws hands

viques · 21/05/2022 18:37

I don’t understand why you are asking for advice when you haven’t even had the decency to post a puppy picture. Hoiks bosoms and gives OP a hard stare.

FayKnights · 21/05/2022 18:41

Agree with @viques 😁
Don’t expect much sleep, even if the pup is really good it’s like having a new baby and you are on high alert for every noise.
Enjoy!

PoseyFlump · 21/05/2022 18:42

I didn't get past 'gorgeous puppy' 😍

tizwozliz · 21/05/2022 18:44

With our lab the first night was fairly successful, think she was shattered from the travel and new place, it was the nights after that that were an issue!

certainshepherdpups · 21/05/2022 19:14

Flexibility is key IMO. You can make all the plans in the world, but the puppy may have other ideas. Grin

And I agree with viques. Puppy tax!

Anewuser · 21/05/2022 21:20

@viques can't believe I'm stupid enough to forget that rule - it's a bit like a parking thread without the diagram.

Beetr00t · 21/05/2022 22:01

(Good luck with your first night, hope he takes after pup 2!)

Basilbrushgotfat · 22/05/2022 01:38

Oh my word, think my heart just melted! 😍

Anewuser · 22/05/2022 06:11

He was a little star. Slept until 5.30 then went out for a wee.

@Anewuser

he is gorgeous!! 😍

how was your first night?!

my friends lab wasn't a one night wonder! He's slept through since the beginning. They were waking him for middle of the night wees, so he didn't wake the whole house very early in the morning. But they didn't do that for very long! He just wakes up & amuses himself quietly. He will 'ask' to go out if he needs to though.

I cannot believe what a dream he's been, but that's her life really. Everything just goes to plan!

they grow ridiculously quickly, he's only 7 months now & is bigger than the other adult family dogs he visits now! Though he's still slim puppy looking, needs to develop some adult muscle!

even though he's a lab, he doesn't Peter for human food as they've NEVER given him any. But get near HIS treat box.....

Twiglets1 · 22/05/2022 07:12

Our Lab cried a lot on his first night with us. He was in a crate downstairs but a nice one with soft blankets and a cuddly toy. I remember feeling awful but we were tough and only went downstairs once or twice to reassure him.
The next night he didn’t cry at all and seemed settled. He was a lovely easygoing dog like most Labs.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 22/05/2022 07:36

He is beautiful. Glad he had a good night.

PugInTheHouse · 23/05/2022 10:40

Glad he had a good night, both our pups have been amazing sleepers, no crying at all either. We do have them in our room though so guessing it makes it easier.

He is very cute, is he your first pup?
