What's the best dog walking coat?

Now we've got a (gorgeous, adorable, all-round-wonderful!) dog, I'm thinking now is a good time to invest in a warm, waterproof coat, whilst I can get one in a sale.

I need something REALLY warm - I have Raynauds and feel the cold terribly - and also waterproof. I just want to not find wet winter dog walks utterly miserable!

I've heard good things about Seasalt coats, and they've got some in the sale atm, but are they PROPERLY warm and waterproof? Or just "quick dash for the bus in a shower" warm and waterproof?

Might cross-post this to Style and Beauty and see how the answers differ!

My Best Buy has been my mountain warehouse alaskan coat. I use it purely for dog walking and it’s been great.
It has survived 2 winters and is still bone dry. I walk in all weathers and it’s never leaked. It washes lovely and enough pockets for various dog rubbish.
It also has a removable inside quilted bit so I take that out on warmer days but can still stay dry.

I would happily buy another!

Ooh, that one is a good price in the sale atm!

It depends on the sort of walking you'll be doing, how many pockets you'll need and whether or not you want a hood. I have a very practical khaki shooting coat, properly waterproof, very warm (cuffs inside the sleeves), umpteen pockets, withstands brambles and mud. I think my current one has done five winters; it's waiting to go through the machine with some TechWash. Looks like nothing earth, but I'm warm so I don't care.

If you don't like hoods, you'll need a hat or three.

For a quick dash of 15-20 minutes in heavy spring or autumn rain, I've got a full length riding coat, a cheapskate version from a country show. Wet legs aren't such a problem if it's not so cold and you'll be indoors soon.

PS I have a Seasalt coat and I really like it, but I use it for work and shopping. I don't think it would handle horizontal rain, and the wind gets up the sleeves.

I have a few different ones. It will also depend how hot you get when you walk as everyone is different.

I have a Rab raincoat that has a fleece lining that I use for long/wet winter walks. It has an inner cuff that's elasticated to stop wind coming up your arms. I got it in the sale a few years ago and it's a v bright colour!

I also have a long coat that I got from Go Outdoors that's v cheap but a bit warmer for v cold weather but I only use it for short walks as I can't do long walks in a long coat without over heating!

I mainly wear a gilet in winter that has loads of pockets that I live in.

I know you say you feel the cold but I'm not sure if you wrap up warm and walk whether that's still the case if you see what I mean!

OrangeBall · 21/05/2022 14:24

This was the cheap one and I have actually ended up wearing more than I thought - but it is v warm so I don't wear it on long walks but that might suit you!

I'm not sure how fast I'd have to walk to warm up, but probably faster than Harry's little legs could manage! I usually have to run rather than walk on very cold days to warm up. I'm reasonably fit but my circulation is completely crap.

I have Raynauds too. Can I recommend a non coat thing? Wrist warmers with finger holes. I love the turtle doves ones. I have a pair for work (still wear them now because my fingers get so cold when I'm typing) and a pair in my dog walking bag.

I have a fab Jack Murphy dog walking one it has a front panel fleece which zips up separately so I can have the waxed bit open and not get too hot whilst walking.

I wear it all year and it's waterproof and windproof and I flipping love it. It even has an inside pocket labelled up for treats. I keep emergency poop bags in there too 🤣

I have an ancient Lands End coat that I’ve work religiously all autumn/winter for about ten years now. It’s a feather down coat but it’s not really waterproof at all. For freezing days it’s the best!

I recently invested in another lands end 3 in 1 coat though, and have been really disappointed. In general their coats are fantastic but for the money I would’ve expected elasticated cuffs and this one, whilst waterproof, is nowhere near as warm as the other. Still great coats, though
