Does anyone have a dog that enjoys their stay in kennels?

I would not trust my dog with a pet sitter as she may run away (she has form). I have found some kennels that look lovely with 3 walks a day which she would love. I am not sure I would enjoy a holiday thinking she was miserable.

I’m not sure where you are, but I use a dog ‘hotel’ where dogs have their own rooms with sofa/armchair. During the day the have a huge enclosed field to play in, paddling pools, slides, cuddles etc. It’s near to Swanley, Kent. They are also a daycare and you need to have a trial day before they’ll accept your dog.

Mine have all loved the kennels we used to use (for over 25 years) but sadly they have closed down.

I would say it depends on the set up being right for your dog and careful introductions. Mine were all able to just go for a walk around and have a fuss and a treat from the owner and kennel hands on their first visit. We were then able to leave them for just an hour, then an afternoon, then an evening plus overnight, so they got used to it gradually.

It was also privately owned with the owners living on site. Some kennels don’t have staff on site overnight, which is madness to me.

Another important factor was that they owned all the land the dogs were walked on, all of it was securely double fenced and they also had secure paddocks for those that couldn’t go for walks. (I visited kennels once to find all the dogs being walked in big groups by one tiny teenager along a country road and over a motorway bridge to be walked in local fields!)

There was a quiet block for dogs that could be overwhelmed by barking and some kennels were positioned so that the dogs couldn’t see into other kennels if it might agitate the occupants.

Couldn’t have been a more perfect set-up as far as kennels go really and we were so sad when they finally retired and closed the business. My dogs used to drag us into the kennels they were so excited to be there.

We have looked at quite a few other kennels locally since they shut down and nothing even comes close. We now have a family friend who is a professional dog-sitter and they stay in our home to look after our dogs.

We use a kennels that they both seem to like and a home boarder who has deer fenced paddocks for walkies / zoomies

They ar me always happy to go and to come
Home so seems fine to me!

I though you meant the dog sitter ran away!

Yes he loves it. DH familyHave used theSE kennels in 30 plus years and now

We use them for day care too and build up to overnights. 1 then three then a week. We also take him to the play field. He is not an easy dog. We put him in for a night to start the a a few day care days then a couple of over nights.

During the pandemic I spoke to the owner said I'm worried about ddog coming into kennels (not about dog about them not being able to handle him) he said you and everyone else
Mate drop him off and forget about him. It was the best advice now he loves it. And comes back as if nothing had happened.

It's £12 a night! Same price for boarding! Crackers prices on here. It's not not a play farm but they look after him and he's had a few problems of late and they have been amazing!! So amazing I need to take them a box of biscuits next time he goes in x

There are quite a few reasons why I prefer kennels to any home boarding/ pet sitter situation.

Ours kennels are fantastic- they do health checks on the dogs every day. They have a huge enclosed field for dog to run around in. They even have a pool so you can book a swim. I know he is fed/ safe and his basic needs are met.

I can’t guarantee this with a home
boarder. Sadly I’m seeing lots of posts on local Facebook of dogs running off whilst in the dog sitters care. No chance of that at a kennel. Our dog is reactive so can’t be home boarding with other dogs.

You have to have huge trust to have someone in your home. Would they do all the walks? Would they leave the dog alone for hours/ remember to too water up etc. Though they are my trust issues.

Our dog pulls at the lead to get to the kennels. I know he is safe there and well looked after. That’s the bottom line.

I absolutelyd understand your worries. I left my dog with a kennel before lockdown to go on holiday & they were adamant that they would walk her off lead 4x a day but that wasn’t the case at all (plus they didn’t feed her what I gave them) but she was absolutely fine and happy when I picked her up. They treated her well but just not as well as at home! Please don’t worry x
