Behaviour change senior dog

Hi all

I am the owner of a very nearly 15 year old staffy. She’s been a great family dog and we have never had any behavioural issues.

Just recently she’s been treated for an ear infection but other than that the vet said she was looking sprightly for her age. She enjoys her food and walks still.

My issue is she is whining all day in the house whilst I am working from home. This is accompanied by her pacing the house in a restless manner. I’m not sure what is wrong? I asked the vet but they seem to think she’s okay health wise.

When my husband comes in from work she settles down straight away and you will not hear a peep from her all evening. Does anyone have an idea on why she would suddenly start to do this? She’s always been content with him out the house.

She is deaf now too so probably can’t hear herself whining, and neither does she hear me if I give her an instruction.

Thanks in advance.

Worth a vet check again.

I am no medic but I would want to rule out pain and also dog dementia - which is very common. Dogs can pace get disorientated, forget their way around the home etc.

Possibly pain but then when my husband comes home she is very content and quiet. I’ve been to two different vets over the past few weeks and still none the wiser. She had an ear hematoma drained a few weeks back and hasn’t been right since but the vet said it’s healed up okay.

i will look into dementia.

When you are working is she near you? My 'office' is in the loft so I have to carry senior blind and deaf ddog up so he knows in there. He can't navigate the stairs anymore.

Worth mentioning dementia to the vets, we asked for years for help with dogs behaviour but were brushed off by vet as physically there wasn't anything wrong. If it had been diagnosed earlier he could have started drugs earlier to help.

Yes I will definitely mention dementia @paoejehah

@nearlyspringyay

I work downstairs and she relentlessly walks round crying and whining even though she can see me. If I take the laptop upstairs she stops whining and she goes to bed and settles (so when I’m out of sight this actually stops the crying). I haven’t got any room upstairs at all so it isn’t ideal to work there but I did this afternoon sitting on my bed out of desperation.
