Flea and worm

We have a lovely vet who is quite old and a bit of a hippy I suspect as he doesn’t want us to de-worm and de-flea our dog as a matter of routine but only if we spot fleas / worms…

I’ve followed his advice but the tiny dog has started sleeping in my daughter’s bed and she has a few bites on her leg that might be flea bites. And now I’m wishing I had just treated the dog!!!

id much rather give the dog chemicals than have to fumigate the house etc etc.

so the dog is out of the human’s bed and I am hoovering / washing like mad.

I like my vet and don’t want to register with another one. Is there an online vet I can get treatments from? Or can anyone recommend Worming / flea-ing treatment I can get without going to a vet??

Or can I use more than one vet maybe??

You can buy worm and flea treatment at Pets at Home. It's the same as the vet prescribes but they will ask you lots of questions.

Scampi89 · 09/05/2022 18:26

We get ours from the vet but it’s only because I’ve paid a subscription thing.
droncit for worming, it’s a tablet they take every 3 months.
symparica for flea - tablet once a month

both good. I find the oral flea treatment better than the topical flea treatment as that’s a bit faffy.

Yes second the PaH subscription one.
You'll have to weigh your dog.

I always treat my pups/dogs with Pets At Home stuff. The vets seem to charge a small fortune for the same treatment.

PAH can supply an equivalent of frontline of Advantage both of which have been around for over 30 years.
The products from the vets are much newer have faster kill times and many treat for longer. These are prescription only medicines.

Remainiac · 09/05/2022 21:29

Have a look at ItchPet. It’s a subscription service.

Floralnomad · 09/05/2022 21:51

Itch pet will also be non prescription products you are better off just spending the money at the vets . Woman up and just tell the vet you want a monthly treatment you are the one paying the bills .

This is not true ,vets products are POM- prescription only medicine .
I work in practice , i'm not recommending any individual POM products but would choose them over non POM every time.
I see time and time again frustrated clients who tell me they have tried every thing to treat fleas, when questioned its always everything the pet shop has to offer , they then have to spend even more money at the vets to get on top of the problem with a product that does work.
Vets have to purchase through a veterinary wholesaler ,we can't get it for the price you can from an online pet meds supplier.
When you decide what product you want to buy ask your vet for a written prescription ,you will probably avoid the vet as you will either speak to a receptionist or they may have an online order system .
You will get charged for the script but will still save money long term .

Great advice - many thanks - the poster who told me to “woman up” made me laugh, think they are right!

what about ticks? The dog is going to stay in a tick area. Can I get it all in one?

many thanks for help .

Update: rang vet and said dog is sleeping with child and some unexplained bites so they happily gave me Nexgard Spectra for 3 months. This will cover ticks too.

think I’ll do this seasonally rather than monthly - I mean every summer month. Nice to have her wormed too.

thanks for the advice everyone. Don’t know why I’m slightly scared of vets!

Glad you're sorted , but be aware fleas are very stubborn ! if late summer into autumn is warm and damp there is often a surge , if you aren't planning to treat 12 months of the year i would certainly carry on until cooler weather.
Don't be scared of vets 😊

Floralnomad · 10/05/2022 22:05

I’d also check your area on the lungworm map , I do our dog all year as he sleeps on the beds and we are in a relatively high lungworm area plus I know of 2 dogs locally that have had it .

I would treat both worms and fleas on a regular basis instead of skipping treatments.

All it takes is for you to miss a month and you have an infestation.

GuyFawkesDay · 10/05/2022 22:20

Ours is on Nexguard monthly via a vet subscription, and then has another wormer to cover the full range every few months

Far better than risking infestation to me
