Tips for aftercare-dog being spayed

Hi, she’s booked in soon and just after some tips for the aftercare if anyone has them. She’ll have a bodysuit and will have the vets on call and check ups but I’m wondering what at home I can do too. I’ll be using kongs, snuffle mats and interactive toys to keep her occupied when she’s recovering and only on short exercise. She tends to get up on the sofa so will watch that, she does have two beds and some fluffy blankets I can put down. Any tips on anything else I can prepare for? Thanks.

Our dog is of the opinion the sofa is hers. We completely restricted her going on it for three days by blocking it off and bringing the outdoor sofa cushions in to create a cosy place for us all to sit for a few days. We kept her on a lead in the garden and also when we went upstairs to bed to avoid her running up the stairs. Tbh less than 48 hours after the op she escaped her slip lead in the garden and bombed around. We were allowed 2x 10 minute walks daily from the next day, going up to 3x 30 minutes after three days. We were doing her usual hour long walks after a week but tried to stick to quieter times or places to avoid her playing too much with other dogs. After 10 days she got given the all clear for off lead/long line/ unrestricted exercise.

The bodysuit was great, we had a load of Kong's/lickimats etc.

Thank you. She has a sofa in ‘her room’ where she sleeps. I wouldn’t really want to try her sleeping elsewhere as she’s used to that room and can’t block the sofa off. I’m wondering about try to put a stool and blankets on so she can easily climb up.

Mine was spayed two and a half weeks ago. She wore the body suit for two weeks, check ups on days 2 and 12. Was on liquid paracetamol for 10 days.
We kept her off the sofa for 4 days but gave up when she decided to leap over the back of it from the floor 😱
She went on a lead in the garden for 4 days but our garden’s tiny so let her roam thereafter.
Walks- we were told 5-10 minutes twice a day, not easy with a dog used to 3-4 hours of walks! Definitely no playing or leaping around.
She had Kongs etc and I bought a selection of natural chews; it wasn’t too bad really.

Thank you. Will stock up on chews. I could potentially try and block the sofa with a bench and putting things on it. I just don’t want to make her room different for her if she’s feeling off. She does have a lovely big fluffy bed! We’re they more tired for a few days? I’ll keep my eye on her on the lead in the garden for the first few days and see how it goes.

is she getting traditional or lap spay? Mine had lap spay and was a bloody nightmare because she felt absolutely fine (and you're talking about the dog who falls to the ground whining as if shot if a leaf lands on her!)

She was cross she couldn't have her usual walks, furious she had to be lifted on and off the bed and sofa or use the steps we borrowed and wanted to carry on as usual. She did like the cream cheese on lick mats to keep her in one place for a bit!

She got a new bone, some buffalo chews, fed using her snuffle mat and loads of snuggles on her favourite fluffy rug.

Mine was a traditional spay, she was a bit tired for the first 48 hours then seemed back to normal, she didn’t show any signs of pain or discomfort.
She had a light dirt (scrambled eggs, chicken) for a few days because she was a bit off her food but she’s not normally a greedy dog anyway.
Getting her in and out of the car we used a ramp.
I bought fish chews, chicken jerky and a couple of other natural ones.
Looking at her now you’d never know she’d had surgery 17 days ago!

Traditional. Yeah I’ll defiantly get some fresh cooked chicken for her. I do worry when she’s through the first couple of days keeping her not running around so will see how she gets on with the lead in the garden.

We had two crates one for downstairs and one for upstairs to stop her jumping on the sofa and bed. We carried her upstairs and lifted onto the sofa. It was a nightmare she kept trying to jump up anyway.
Lead in the garden.
also pet gates to prevent her going upstairs and in rooms unsupervised.
she was a bit drowsy for 24 hours but normal thereafter.

Our dog adjusted well to not being able to run and leap around, even though she’s very active normally. We had a basic slip lead for the garden that we don’t yet use outside and she seemed to take that as a signal to slow down.
She was very unhappy about not being allowed on the sofa or chairs when we blocked them off, so after a few days we built a cushion staircase up to the lowest one. She was more than happy with this and spent a lot of time curled up there, properly asleep rather than restless in the huge crate we got for her recovery.
we did lots of lickimats, stuffed kongs, finding food in boxes etc to keep her occupied and some handling training (rewards and choices for touch).
I had Covid from a few days before she was spayed so we were both a bit wild-eyed on our first walk round the block!

Thanks so much for the advice and hating experiences. I’m still undecided about the sofa in her room, a pillow star case could be the best bet! I just want her to feel comfortable. Will have a look at the slip lead option too.
