Insurance

My dog is 18, she's done really well but very old now and a few breathing problems. I pay £100 a month to insure her. I'm not sure it's worth continuing as at this stage I wouldn't put her through surgery and any minor treatment I can most likely pay for. I've never had an end of life dog before, can anyone advise on likely costs?

Many thanks

Gosh, no. Put the money in an account instead for minor treatments and/or when it's time. What a trooper of a dog!

This is what I'm thinking.

Yes, she's a lovely rescue mutt and I've been very lucky!

I know you've said no surgery but if she lost weight / started having diarrhoea/ the breathing got slightly worse, would you want to do any investigations (blood tests, chest xray, a night or two on IV fluids to see if she perked up) before making the final decision? Those costs can mount up v quickly too, so worth considering.

Also check if your policy covers euthanasia and/or cremation/private cremation (if thats what you would choose). If it covers both, it may be worth continuing.

Oh thanks very good points. Will look into that.

I think at that point I wouldn't be paying out for insurance.

Eighteen is such a good age but any tests and scans will probably do more harm than good as she's really too old for any kind of sedation.

Personally I would put the money aside and use it to spoil her rotten in her last months with you:
