My gorgeous rescue boy is 15 and so miserable. He paces, has accidents, stares, cries at night and is bad in his back legs. Still loves his treats. I'm giving him lots tbh at the moment.

I know it's time. I'm devastated. He hates the vets so wanted one to come here. I contacted the pet crematorium and they've put me in touch with a vet. She just rang and was so lovely. Said she can be out within 2 working days or as an emergency. Ddog hasn't been to the vet much just for vax and last year for age related problem but never see the same one. Plus doubt they'll come out.
Sounds as if this vet does this a lot?

There's going to be so many upset. Grown dss and friends mainly. My closest is his 2nd mam. Dreading telling her.

Sorry to hear your dog's not well. My mum had her last dog pts at home by a vet that just does home visits for pts. She said it was lovely and peaceful and a far better end than the other dogs who went off to the vet to have it done. The vet let them have as much time as they needed and was incredibly kind. If you can afford it i think this is a much better option to let the dog go in his own surroundings and its what I'll do for my dog when the time comes.

I’m so sorry @Juniper68 its so very hard. 15 is a good age, he’s clearly had a lot of good times with you.

My vet does home visits as a matter of course rather than it being a Herculean effort, she’s absolutely lovely and so good with him (he’s scared silly of vets). If you happen to be in S Warks it’s probably the same one. They can sedate your pup first so they’re calm for the injections, that’s our plan, it takes about 20 mins more but seems a lot more gentle if they don’t like being touched by a vet.

My boy had to be PTS at the start of the first lockdown. He also hated going to the vet and going into the building wasn't an option due to the restrictions. The car was our dog's favourite place in the world so the vet did it there. She was on one side leaning through the door and we were on the other cradling his head. It was all remarkably peaceful and he slipped away being in his happy place. So sorry OP, it's an incredibly hard this to do.

Thank you both 💖

That's a good idea about sedation.

Ds1 just got back to me he's devastated as expected.

Did you post on here about that? So glad he wasn't stressed 💖
Our boy hates the car. He doesn't go far at all now just around the corner.

So sorry, the last kind thing to do for your lovely dog. Much easier for them in familiar surroundings. They leave such a gap in our lives.

Hi Juniper I did post about this previously but it doesn't sound like it would be a great solution for your dog. I kept in touch with the vet we had used prior to moving area and they had agreed to come to the house when the time came. In the end a decision had to be made quickly and this was the best solution for our boy. He was sedated in advance which I think made a real difference keeping him calm and comfortable with the procedure. Thinking of you Flowers

No ddog will be pts in his bed at home.
Ds2 will be home from the navy and ds1 is coming home this weekend to say goodbye.

Just a thought but does the vet do treatment home visits? Might be worth trying him on pain meds first. That may be off the mark, sorry if it is, clearly you know your pup best. My old boy has started on pain meds- also previously vet-avoiding as it was all teeth and poo- and I thought we’d come to the end so I found a home visit vet for pts but she’s treating him for the pain and he’s happy now.

Juniper68 · 05/05/2022 14:12

He's on pain meds but thanks for suggesting it.

Got metacalm from the vet today. He was surprised that ddog still had an appetite. I'd taken his favourite treats. Ddog is very relaxed so that's good it must have helped.

That’s good news, glad DDog is a bit happier.

Juniper68 · 06/05/2022 13:33

Thanks. Seems to have helped quickly.
