RSPCA rehoming

drinkingwineoutofamug · 01/05/2022 17:36

I've seen a dog that's up for rescue with the rspca. Same breed as mine.
We are 3 adults in a house, large back garden, fenced and hedges.
1 adult works full time, I work shifts ,3rd adult unemployed.
We go on 7 mile walks and also have a dog field about 10 mins walk away.
But I hear bad experiences with the rspca not letting people adopt if working etc.
is it worth me enquiring about the pup or just cross my fingers some else has her.
Just to say she's actually in the daily mail and I've looked on line at her as well. She's a whippet /collie . Mines a whippet /mali so understand that she will be mental.

If the dog will regularly be left then you are unlikely to get a dog from the RSPCA.

They will discount the unemployed person as one assumes they will get a job at some point.

WIth this particular dog they will be looking for someone interested in dog sport and I imagine fly ball people will bite their hand off for her.

Happenchance · 01/05/2022 19:10

It's worth putting an application in but she's already been returned three times, so they're probably going to be picky about her next (and hopefully) final home.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 01/05/2022 19:56

Really hope so , she's beautiful

XelaM · 01/05/2022 21:25

I read about her. Please apply OP! Your adult-only home with a dog of similar breed mix and energy levels sounds perfect for her.

Why has she been returned so many times in such a short time?! She's only a puppy.

ScattyHattie · 01/05/2022 21:25

Just apply as won't know otherwise, the important thing is to make it clear what care plans in place and timespans the pup will be left. If the unemployed adult gets a job will that make a difference.

I thought the rehoming centres worked under RSPCA umbrella but still had to do own fundraising & they all seem to have different websites so are perhaps managed individually in regards to home checks & policies, the Greyhound Trust is like that.

Shy bairns get nowt...
Try op. Surely the ddog is owed that?

NamechangeFML · 01/05/2022 21:36

If shes in the papers dont get your hopes up - one of the staff will probably home her or have someone in mind for her, sorry. They use these stories to draw attention to their charity.

PollyRoulllson · 02/05/2022 08:45

@XelaM Have you read her info.?
She is reactive to dogs, has separation distress, gets car sick, is a counter surfer, jumps up and not appropriate to be rehomed with kids as she is a jumper and nipper. Is high energy and needs 24/7 attention. Not a dog suitable for all homes!

@NamechangeFML like this dog? Publicised in multiple news outlets in March but still looking for a home: metro.co.uk/2022/03/30/dog-whos-spent-750-days-in-rspca-shelter-desperately-needs-a-home-16371113/😍

drinkingwineoutofamug · 02/05/2022 10:39

About to phone them. We can leave our dog for about 4 hours in between shifts , or if we go out and have someone who comes during that time to let out for toileting etc.
done financial maths and we can afford another dog.
Garden has fences with hedges in front , house has been dog proofed to the best of our capabilities.
Failing that we will try other rescue places. Partner is happy it's a puppy , the site just says she's young. Got our dog at 18 months so missed the puppy stage, just the terrible 2's

I've just seen her posted on a kelpie website. The ears might say kelpie x whippet.

Kelpies are very collie like in nature!

drinkingwineoutofamug · 02/05/2022 10:57

Well phoned . Refused. We live too far away. I'm flabbergasted.
I hope someone else takes her in and loves her.

mummabubs · 02/05/2022 11:06

That does seem like a silly reason to not even consider you, especially as they went to a national media outlet with the story. Did you say you'd be willing to travel to meet her? Sorry they weren't more accommodating/ open OP. Dogs Trust would have still considered people who weren't local, as does the greyhound rescue charity we got our boy from-they'd rather a dog went to the right home for them rather than whoever was closest(!)

Wow that's crazy! No wonder so many dogs are in rescues and people resort to buying puppies

ScattyHattie · 02/05/2022 12:12

The centre perhaps only contacted their local media and it's since been lifted by national news similar as they do with MN or other SM stories.

Its a shame, but i don't think can blame the rescue for wanting to keep their dogs within an area that's practical for them to do home check & deal with any issues that arise, sometimes dogs need multiple visits to gain trust in potential adopters too. When people decide it's not working out they often expect a rescue to come and collect the dog ASAP sometimes that's within 24hrs.

Many sighthound rescues have posted that their breaking point with high numbers of dogs needing to come in and adoption enquiries dropping off. So are plenty available if want to foster or adopt.

Here's some that are national homing, if want to give area I can find more.

The OP may not have this particular dog but it's not like aren't others available to adopt elsewhere and those rescues are choc full of those bought puppies no longer wanted. Many youngsters that were bought by people on a whim during lockdowns aren't just lacking in basic training but may have quite complex behavioural issues to work on making them difficult to find the right homes.

Happenchance · 02/05/2022 15:37

That's a shame @drinkingwineoutofamug and something that they should have made clear in her write-up. Did they say why?

There's a similar looking 10 month old male lurcher in a new rescue called Dogs Roam Free in Swansea (I'm not endorsing this rescue).
