Training dog to go to child

I’d really like to train my dog to go to my child and wait with him while I catch them up, in a nutshell. Where do I start with training this? šŸ™‚

I'd start by training two things

  • a "go to place" command (eg go to bed)
  • a "stay" command

Then I'd move onto a go to person command, and finally merge it with a stay

Is your child old enough to engage in training? For instance when they get to the child a treat appears from their pocket.

I taught my dog 'wait' very easily by getting someone to walk ahead of me with him on lead, and stop when I called wait. The release is a long deliberate stroke down the back (so you could clip a lead on him or put a hand on his collar if you needed to). It's a really useful command; they instinctively get it.
Learning names of family members is a fun one; supply child with treats and ask dog "where's Jamie?" while Jamie (at first) calls dog.

It depends if the child is old enough to participate in the training? If so its just simply training y

Opps training your child to train the dog to follow his/her commands to come and sit/wait. If the child is too young or unable to participate it will be a matter of teaching the dog to go to the child so a find it type command and then a wait command.

Does your dog have any impulse control training in place already - eg. can they already stop, leave, wait and stay on command?

Spudlet · 01/05/2022 18:26

Thanks everyone. Lots of ideas here!

DS is 6 and has ASD - he’d love the idea of helping with training but I’m not sure he’d have the impulse control tbh. He can be a bit of a speed demon on his bike, and while he knows to stop and wait for me, I’d feel a bit better if there was a big dog waiting beside him sometimes…! Plus - mainly really - it would be a bit of fun for both of them.

Spudpup has a decent (for a teenage dirtbag) recall, sit and wait. We haven’t trained the stop whistle for a while but we can resurrect that.

If he calls the dog and just says "sit" it should just sit by his side (especially if he has treats).

Our dog listens to my daughter more than to me because she's stricter with his training and I have a soft touch (he's my second baby) 😁He listens to my daughter without question.

My dog knows a find them command and that means to go to a person out with us. It could be one to go and get you child to hide and then the dog to find and then build out from there- you son will like the hide and seek with the dog too
