How to stop the itching/footbiting?

I have an 11 year old Maltese/yorkie. She has always been itchy and I'd love to know if there is any more I can do to help her stop.

i give her Dorwests garlic and fenugreek tablets once a day, and a dose salmon oil. She is given a sensitive dry food mix, with a small amount of tinned food twice a day. I have tried Yumega oil.

The vet reckons it is allergy/sensitivities related, but I'm hoping someone can suggest something that has worked well for them.

Thanks

You need proper medication from the vet to stop this. Lots of options available, must be very frustrating for her constantly being itchy

My dog is awful for this (Staffy), he has Piton twice a day and is on prednisolone long term too. I'm surprised your vet hasn't recommended any proper medical treatment tbh and would push for that, it must be awful to feel so itchy all the time

Medication options include: steroids (prednisolone), apoquel, cyclosporine (atopica / cyclavance), cytopoint.

the new virbac derm diet is worth a go too.
anti-histamines alone tend to not be strong enough. She needs some proper relief. Ask your vet to discuss the options with you

Have you actually asked your vet?

Fish can be an allergen. Have you tried an elimination diet?
My cats have allergy flare-ups, vet described steroids and antibiotics as standard, kept coming back, hypoallergenic food made it worse in our case. I discovered Piriton and that sorted it.

This I have also had a good response with Purina HA.
I have quite a lot of patients who have had the environmental allergy testing and then immunotherapy which definitely helps. Also if you have the environmental tests you can work on reducing exposure.
My own itchy/atopic cat is entirely controlled by diet.

My girl recently started Apoquel...game changer. She tends to spring and autumn allergies but this year has been awful. Tried Piriton, then the vet tried Prednisolone, then finaly Apoquel. We've just run out and I'll be back at the vets Tuesday to ask for more as it stopped her itching completely!

Go and try some actual vet prescribed meds :)

Thank you for the suggestions ... vet appointment for a definitive way forward will be on my Tuesday to-do list.
i will try the Purina option too.

My dog had terrible itchiness, skin infections, ear infections to the point of becoming resistant to antibiotics. Initially she was on prescription food which helped loads, she has potato/duck. She was prescribed cyclosporine, it helped a bit. About 6 years ago she was given Apoquel & it was life changing for her. Made such a big change to how she felt. Work with your vet for the best solution for your pet

Ddog was younger when he started itching and the vet suggested allergy testing. We got a long list of things he's allergic to. Then they are able to offer a 'vaccine' (immunotherapy) to the environmental allergies and you can eliminate the food based allergies from the diet. It was quite expensive, about £600 for the test and first year vaccine program, but it totally transformed his life.

Apoquel is a game changer. My Lab has seasonal allergies and we use Apoquel for the summer months. It's not cheap, £1.60 per tablet! But it works.
*incidentally, isn't garlic poisonous to dogs? You give them garlic tablets?
