Lurcher people - is this normal?

I know lurchers have a reputation for being a bit lazy but our pup is surprising me a bit so would love to hear your thoughts.

(The vet has said she’s fine and is happy with her activity level so nothing to worry about physically.)
She’s ten months old and her days usually look like this:
walk in the morning with me (30-45 mins, mix of pottering, sniffing, maybe a play with dog friends)
sleep all day / bit of pottering about the house (I wfh)
Evening another walk (similar to morning)
she’s a bit livelier in the evenings so we play with her/ do a bit of training.
A couple of times a week she also goes out with a dog walker for about an hour with a little group of other dogs and she sometimes has a 20 min play with her best dog friend who lives across the street.

However, most mornings I get the sense that she’d much rather do her business then go and curl up back in bed! And she’s so snoozy in the day too. Is this normal? My other lurcher was super keen for his morning walks whereas she’s just a bit ‘meh’. She was an absolutely horror of a puppy who would never settle so this seems quite at odds with that, but has been a gradual change into slothdom rather than sudden. Or perhaps she is actually doing quite a lot and is tired.
Any thoughts? She’s doing about an hour a day activity - maybe a bit more on dog walker days. She reminds me of a cat more than a dog…

That's a lurcher!

XVGN · 29/04/2022 10:42

... mine cries if he has to go out.

Is she a saluki mix type? Looking at social media this morning, three of my former foster pups of much the same age are pictured sleeping under blankets, one of whom spent 4 hours yesterday on her own and was found in exactly the same place, asleep on the sofa under the blanket with snooker on the tv.
My own lurchers spend the vast proportion of the day asleep

PearlyGirls · 29/04/2022 11:35

@CMOTDibbler no she’s a bedlington terrier x whippet. My other lurcher was Dalmatian x greyhound so I must learn not to compare!

That is so normal for a whippety lurcher. My whippety pups have been like 'its 7pm, time for wall of death' and literally running up the walls, and then they mature a bit and sleep a lot and you wonder how it changed over. Whippets are like cat dogs, but def not as smaller puppies.
And I have to say, a dalmation x greyhound! What was someone thinking?

rbe78 · 29/04/2022 12:03

Yep, normal!

My lurcher can be pretty active - loves a good ball chase at the beach, and will happily come along on miles-long hikes with us - but her natural happy place is curled up half-asleep on her bed or somewhere in the sun. Unless we're out on a walk with her, she's snoozing basically!

TreetopsandTailwaggers · 29/04/2022 12:14

Yep, sounds like my Lurchers. Loved their walks once they were out, but spent pretty much all of the rest of their time asleep. On cold and rainy days, they wouldn’t be keen to go out, preferring to snooze away.

noblegreenk · 29/04/2022 12:21

Completely normal for a lurcher - it's the lazy greyhound genes!

PearlyGirls · 29/04/2022 12:55

Ahh thanks everyone. I will leave her in peace! @CMOTDibbler the Dalmatian x grey was a rescue and think was a ‘mistake’ but he was a total gent.

Our lurcher is half bedlington whippet and this wouldn't be unusual for him. Likes to sprint around randomly sometimes, but likes to be left to chill quite a lot of the time. He enjoys his morning walk, but doesn't necessarily get off the sofa for it until I tell him to!

I think he definitely leans towards being active in the afternoon and evenings rather than mornings too.

aoeu · 29/04/2022 13:04

I hadn't heard the comparison of whippets to cats before, but do see a bit of that. An independently minded critter, and he definitely likes to sit around and watch the world like a cat.

Doesn't mean he actually likes cats of course...

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 29/04/2022 13:05

Mine is a not a lurcher but he is exactly the same, always has been. He's 2 now and so lazy. Does not want to get up in the mornings. He likes his walks but never hassles for them.

Omg this would be my dream with my five month old nightmare Tibetan terrier 🤣 she's cute but constantly bouncing off the walls and needing stimulation all day long. This post gives me hope!
