Dandruff in Labrador

Our 3 year old black Lab has developed dandruff quite badly.
I brushed him today and it seems to have made it worse.
He's got a check up at the vet next week but just wondering what causes the dandruff and how can I treat it? He's huge so plopping him in the bath is a no no.😁

It could be an allergic reaction, does he eat plants?

Kat1953 · 28/04/2022 18:21

Aloe vera worked for my friends dogs, squeezed straight for the leaf and rubbed in.

Could be his food? Gave you considered raw if not on it already?

2 or 3 tablespoons of olive oil or cod liver oil a week on his food should help.

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 28/04/2022 19:46

He does get seasonal allergies and was on apoquel last summer for an itchy belly. He didnt have dandruff then tho. This is the first time I've seen dandruff.
His food is ok I think, as I say he's fine in the winter. His poo is always firm like it should be.
What sort of dose of cod liver oil should I use? Is it just bought from the chemist?
TIA 😊

A couple/3 of table spoons a week. Would be cheaper in supermarket or amazon I imagine…….
can also give him any left over salmon/mackerel skin etc from your meals.

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 28/04/2022 19:57

Thankyou! He has sardines once a week with his kibble.
I will order some cod liver oil.
I used to add "youderm" oil to his feed when we first had him but at £25 a bottle I can't afford it now.

Would this be ok?

Yes that salmon oil looks fine. Cod liver oil capsules may also work, but just be sure you don’t give him anything with added vitamin D as that can quickly become toxic to dogs.
AloeVera is not great if they lick it so don’t use that anywhere he can reach. I also find lavender gel crème soothes any specific itchy areas.

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 28/04/2022 21:06

Thankyou! I'm.so wary about giving supplements but I'm guessing this is made for dogs so should be OK.
The apoquel tablets he had last summer stopped the itching instantly, the tablets are now £1.60 each so I use them only if he really starts scratching.
This is the ingredients for the salmon oil....
Really appreciate everyone's help, thanks.

Our 9 year old black lab gets very dandruffy when he moults twice a year, started around the same age as yours. Looks terrible on his black coat and brushing makes it look worse, it doesnt seem to bother him. The rest of the year he is fine.

FlamingNuts · 28/04/2022 21:23

We use Vetzyme tablets for our lab's coat.

My first black Labrador had dandruff along the ridge of his back. Our lovely vet recommended Head and Shoulders, which cleared it and it never came back.
