How much to feed my new puppy

I've gone round in circles with this, and got myself in a pickle. What amount would you recommend to feed a new puppy (Shih Tzu)
They currently have Pedigree Puppy pouches (100g each) and Harringtons dry puppy food.
The guidelines say you feed:
20g per 1kg of body weight

So if my boy weighs 1.5kg, that equals 1 and a half pouches?
But what if I want to incorporate the dry food (for breakfast)?

Initially feed the same food and frequency as the breeder - any changes should be gradual to avoid an upset tummy.
You could reduce the wet food by 1/3rd, then feed 1/3rd of the recommended amount of dry food, for example.

Also, rather than just feeding the dry for breakfast, it can be good to use it for training Smile

No, that equals about a third of a pouch.

Did the breeder feed Pedigree and Harringtons?

Personally, given the tiny amounts that these dogs eat, I would choose a better quality food and I would feed to appetite for a tiny baby. Aim to have him not quite clear his dish, but not leave much, until you get a handle on his appetite.

I have just got a toy breed after a lifetime of bigger dogs, and it was a baptism of fire realising quite how little an amount they do eat.

The breeder said he was feeding three pouches a day, which is what I am doing. But it seems alot. He does scoff if all down

A quick Google reveals pedigree actually say the wet dry split to feed but agree with others I’d choose a good quality feed and loosely follow the guidelines depending on your dog

He was on three pouches a day, but has been having runny poo's. So I'd like to change the diet, but gradually.
I'm thinking 60g of Harringtons for breakfast and 1 pouch for lunch and 1 for dinner.

Has he been dewormed?

Yes, they have been. The owner wasn't sure if they were done a week ago (at vets). Maybe I should give them more treatment. I hadn't thought that this could be the reason/explanation.

It would be good to find out the worming schedule. It's been a while since I worked at a vets (former receptionist) it was usually every 2-3 weeks til around 12 weeks, then monthly, so you'll need to know when it was done last to ensure the next dose is given on time. That could be a reason for loose stools, as could a change in diet.
If pup becomes at all lethargic or stools are watery, they need to see a vet, small breeds especially, as they can become dehydrated quickly.

Poo can also be runny due to over feeding.

Honestly, pedigree is pretty awful so I would maybe cut the pedigree completely, feed the Harringtons and slowly add in a better quality wet food.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 26/04/2022 07:00

agree with the above. Dogs are pretty greedy so he’ll probably scoff down even if overfed!
also yes, pedigree is not great. Don’t do a complete swap unless you want poo Armageddon to clean up but definitely start gradually introducing a better food, it might help with the runny poos, as might feeding a bit less

AnotherOne4 · 26/04/2022 16:35

Thanks for all the replies. I fed Harrington's for breakfast this morning (with a little water), and he scoffed all that down. I think I'll switch from Pedigree too (maybe I was niave, but I assumed Pedigree was the best, because...well because it's Pedigree.)

If he's happy on Harringtons Dry, they also do a wet food that rates really highly.

www.harringtonspetfood.com/collections/harringtons-grain-free-wet-dog-food/products/chicken-with-potato-vegetables-grain-free-wet-puppy-food-18x380g

It says it's sold out on their website but it could come back in to stock soon perhaps? Otherwise I would look at brands like Forthglade and Millie's Wolfheart who both do a good quality wet puppy food.

AnotherOne4 · 26/04/2022 18:39

Thanks @fairylightsandwaxmelts I'll look into those.
I'm going to speak to the vets about his diet too, when we go in two weeks.
