Has anyone taken their dog to the EU from the U.K. since Brexit? Can you check my understanding?

I've taken my dog on the eurotunnel several times but his rabies vacc has expired and his pet passport is invalid anyway now.

So this is my understanding- everything works exactly the same as it did (ie you have to get a rabies vacc more than 21 days before you go and a tapeworm treatment >24/

Hmmm this is the direct page from the gov.uk website. It says here pre Jan 2021 passports are ok. Confusing!

Anyway once you have the certificate it was quite straight forward.

I wouldn't know a kennel near me that would keep our dog for less than £180 for a week. Must be expensive round here. 😩

I think you can use a pet passport issued before 2021 if the rabies vaccine is in date. But you can't get a rabies booster and have a UK vet update a UK pet passport

Lolabalola · 25/04/2022 11:58

If you have a eu pet passport issued pre jan 21 and it is up to date, you can travel into the uk with it, it isn't valid for travel out of the uk. I assume it's so people who live abroad or were travelling can get back ? Anyway it's no good for leaving the uk so you will need an AHC regardless.
Bear in mind although the AHC Is valid for four months, it only covers one outward trip from the uk, so if you go out and come back in two weeks, you can't use same one two months later.
Also, and I'm sure this is obvious, if you use one of the vets who are cheap near a ferry port, you will have to collect the certificate in person with your pet .

This is to enter the UK so yes you can use a UK passport to get into the UK, but you can not use it to leave the UK as Europe no longer recognise them.

@Clymene thanks so much-was going to post much the same query myself!

The explanation I got from my vet as very confusing and at one point they suggested I get DDog a French passport! Confused

Am going to print this off!!

Also pre lockdown we took ddog to France and the very obliging owner of the villa we booked sorted the vet appointment for us.

Bon Voyage everyone!!

Wombat98 · 25/04/2022 17:29

There is a really good FB Group called Animal Health Certificates, apologies if it's already been mentioned. I did look but not at every post.

It's really good as different countries are discussed and the best place to get the AHC itself. France, for instance, can require the dog to be resident and have been registered there for a passport. Spain and Portugal look fairly simple for passports.

OldWivesTale · 25/04/2022 17:31

I've used Abbeywell Vets - so much cheaper and all done online

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 25/04/2022 17:32

@Clymene @HavfrueDenizKisi am also confused-is there a window around travel date that the rabies jab has to be within?

Came away from Vet more confused than when I went in!!!

The blue cross link that I posted earlier I found quite clear: www.bluecross.org.uk/advice/pets/taking-pets-abroad-after-brexit

The rabies jab needs to be at least 21 days before you travel and your dog needs to be at least 12 weeks old before they can have it. The vaccination lasts 3 years.

The tapeworm treatment isn't needed to leave the country but before returning. It has to be done more than a day before you come back but less than 5 days. If you go for a long weekend, you can get it done in the U.K. but any longer and you have to do it while you're away. Last time I contacted a load of local vets near where we were staying and got it all booked in before we left so I didn't have to worry about it except for turning up and paying for it!

At the top of your screenshot doesn’t it say “to enter Great Britain”?

It’s the EU who are imposing the new rules, British passports are invalid as we aren’t in the eu.

vivainsomnia · 26/04/2022 11:42

The vet we saw knew we were not resident and couldn't have cared less. They thought the system from the UK was bonkers.

The only issue is that the rabbies vaccin is only good for 1 year the first time, so will have to go back, which is fine for us. It's 3 years afterwards.
