First Night With Puppy

Is it really as bad as people are telling me? Up all night crying (the puppy, not me 😂)

We pick up our puppy on Sunday, and I'm getting a little nervous about the nights.

I don't find having a puppy hard but I am always at home which makes it easier. If someone in the house has a bit of time off or works from home in a job where you don't have to be on video calls all the time you should be fine. You have to take them outside to go to the toilet regularly. As long as you can do that you shouldn't find it too bad. I love having a puppy about, lots of fun and sweetness.

It just depends on the dog. Our first dog she cried all night. We had to move the crate next to the bed and then move her slowly out of the room and downstairs over the next week. Our second dog went straight into the crate in the kitchen. He didn’t even cry to go out in the night, we had to wake him to put him out. We didn’t even need to put the old T-shirt’s in his crate and our first dog doesn’t sleep in the kitchen so he was by himself.

We got a crate for our puppy. On the first day, we threw in bits of chicken so he would go in crate to eat chicken. We put him in the crate, put a blank blanket over crate. He cried for 15 minutes and I was just about to go downstairs to see to him, but it went quiet and so he went to sleep. The crate was directly under our bedroom so I could hear when he was moving around, which was about 3 am. I let him out in garden, but stayed in the garden with him, as he was so full of energy there was no way he was going back to sleep. I did put a puppy pad in crate, but he ripped it to shreds so didn’t bother with one in the crate again. I put a bowl of water in as well, but don’t think he bothered having any. Each night onwards, he slept a bit longer and by 2 weeks at home he was sleeping through to 6 am and he went in crate happily with a couple of biscuits. Some people have crate in their bedroom to make it easier taking them out every couple of hours, but it worked for us being downstairs. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I think we're prepared as we can be, just getting nervous lol.

What age is puppy? Our cocker was 11 weeks when we got her and she slept through from day 1, although I know this is quite rare but the breeder had made big efforts to start crate training with the pups.
We got a got water bottle and wrapped in a blanket that had been rubbed on her mummy and litter mates, and had a ticking clock in the kitchen. Worked for us, she's now 10 months and sleeps through like a dream from 9.30 til 7.30, in her crate.

We brought our beagle home at 12 weeks - he slept in our room and only woke up for a wee, otherwise he didn't budge or make a sound.

Neither of ours cried at all at night. 1st pup was 8 week old pug, slept from 11-430, wee then up at 7am-ish, think he dropped the night wee within a couple of weeks. He was in a crate and did have the odd accident in the crate.

New pup was 9 weeks when we got him, basically the same but within a few days was sleeping straight through, I got him up the first few days when I heard he was awake but I am not actually sure he really needed to.

They both sleep in our room so I am guessing that makes a difference, older pup sleeps on our bed and new pup on the floor.

Love sleeping with a puppy - either on the sofa or the bed. Comforts them and I get sleep.

We used to have a rota for sleeping Downstairs with pups - otherwise my dc wouldn't have let me have a turn. It's a scared baby taken away from its mother and siblings. Don't make it even more scared or you'll create problems.

AnotherOne4 · 21/04/2022 20:08

Pup is going to be sleeping in our room, so I'm hoping all will go well.
